SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- It could soon cost California shoppers at the checkout aisle if they forget to bring their own bags to the grocery store.

Legislation passed Wednesday by the California Assembly would prohibit grocery stores, pharmacies, liquor stores and convenience stores from giving out plastic bags.

The trick is to recycle ..we use those walmart bags as trash bags ... they work great in waste baskets and even for kitchen trash ..

Saves a few bucks and they replace the plastic trash bags everyone uses

Part of the problem is that the baggers want to put every single item into a bag....is it really easier for me to carry a half-gallon jug of milk (with a handle) if its put in a plastic bag...LOL at the stupidity. And another pet peeve....when did making change become “stack the coins and reciept on top of the bills and shove it back at the customer” who then drops half the coins. To all you cashiers out there...hand them their coins and then count the bills back to them......just venting

I have read the warnings about using them for unwrapped produce and meats...but I was speaking about the environmentalists

I remember when Newsweek predicted the next Ice Age was almost here, and the environmentalists were telling us to ask for plastic bags at the supermarket to save the trees.

It’s now just paper or you can bring your own.

The kicker? If the paper bag is made well (not the rice paper thin re-re-re-cycled stuff), people tend to hold on to them for re-use anyway. I do....They make excellent masks for airbrushing.

Oh, I keep them for other purposes as well. I use them in my bathroom trash bins and keep them on my construction van for whatever. I have paint rollers in two of them right now so I didn't have to wash them out today.

My point was people think everything has to go in a bag when purchased.

About the time that started, I spent my vacations in the lumber country upstate. Asking for plastic was not well received.

I think in San Francisco they do charge for plastic bags. I love plastic bags I use them alot and whenever I get them from the store I save them my husband says I am a hoarder
of bags what will he say now that they are banning them? I think I will bring a pillow case for my groceries and maybe I will put a fabric sticker on it that says “Nanny State Socialists Suck”

Someone at the local hippie store gave us one of those reusable cloth bags. I use it everyday, to hold our son’s Hot Wheels track.

Oh I love the paper bags! They have handles and yes, I save them also. They make wonderful trash bags. Only thing that gets my dander up is they no longer double bag for heavy items like they use to do in the good ole days!

If the supermarkets don’t fight this, they are chumps.

Very annoying, never made any sense. I usually try to thwart this procedure by grabbing the paper money only. Let the change and receipt fall where they may, lol.

A fun thing to do I just thought of would be to buy only what I can carry in my hands. Let the markets see how much business they lose if they are wimpy enough to go along with this chit.

Compare how much plastic you carry out in the actual plastic shopping bags to how much plastic you carry out with a gallon of milk.

What next, are we going to have to bring our gallon milk jugs in too and have them refilled at the store?
