Study: Obamacare Fails to Pay for High Risk Pools
Moneynews ^ | 6/3/2010 | Julie Crawshaw

President Barack Obama's new healthcare law reportedly doesn't allocate nearly enough money to cover the estimated 5.6 million to 7 million Americans with pre-existing medical conditions who will qualify for temporary high-risk insurance pools

An analysis by the Center for Studying Health System Change found that the new law “could leave hundreds of thousands of potential participants with serious medical problems unable to obtain coverage,” and concluded that the $5 billion earmarked for the pools might cover as few as 200,000 people a year.

That’s double the number of people now covered by underfinanced risk pools in 35 states, the New York Times reported.

The gap will force policymakers to freeze enrollment in the new pools, limit access and benefits, or increase premiums, prompting officials in 20 states to decline to establish their own federally financed pools because of concerns over intense pressure to pick up the burden if the money runs out.

...Well, Pelosi said we had to pass Obamacare so we can figure out what's in it.

Gee, wasn’t this one of the CRITICAL CRISIS reasons why we HAD to have this monstrosity thrust upon us?

Eventually...everyone will have access to real healthcare....but you may have to travel six hours to the one free clinic that covers you. This makes sense.

I’m glad we didn’t want to correct the septic tank problem in America.

Shouldn’t it say “Unexpectedly” in the title, like with the unemployment numbers that are actually quite expected?

Democrats' plan to help uninsurables requires 6-month wait

You're afraid your cancer is back, and a health insurance company just turned you down.

Under the health care bills in Congress, you could apply for coverage through a new high-risk pool that President Barack Obama promises would immediately start serving patients with pre-existing medical problems.

Wait a second. Read the fine print. You may have to be uninsured for six months to qualify.

"If you are a cancer patient and have cancer now, you can't wait six months to go into a plan because your condition can go from bad to death," said Stephen Finan, a policy expert with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. He called the waiting period in the Senate bill "unacceptable."

Yep!

Wife had thyroid cancer, then a double masectomy a few months ago at MD Anderson- Houston. As her BCBS Cobra ran out, and no other options, we’ve got her in the Texas risk pool at $700+ per month.

But with a medical $2500 deductible, a $250 drug deductible, and the requirement that we pay 20% of whatever medical bills, I guess that this very expensive Texas plan will not be available once OZer0-care kicks in, as it won’t meet the OZer0-care minimum benefit levels.

Don’t know what we’ll do, as I’m sure that
OZer0 care will be a total disaster, and MD Anderson won’t accept it.

All I want is that my wife has options, yes expensive options, but options to keep her healthy.

(PS: She’s doing wonderful, coming back strong!)

“...to freeze enrollment in the new pools, limit access and benefits...”

Sounds like rationing of healthcare to me or is it like amnesty - as long as they don’t call it rationing or amnesty even though it is rationing or amnesty, then it doesn’t count?

That seems to be how liberals reason.

Hey, sorry to hear that. It never ceases to amaze me how incompetent this POTUS is. But hopefully, we can repeal this stinker or have the Supreme Court effectively strike it down, and replace it with a good health care law.

Glad to hear that your wife is doing well. Best wishes for her recovery.

Not even Congress can make two plus two equal five because Madam Pelousy was too lazy to check her homework. When gaping shortfalls appear, that will have the same effect as defunding it.

$5 billion for 200,000 people = $25,000 per person. Isn’t that a Cadillac plan?

I think if the economy is still in the tank when HC goes live there will be massive disobedience. Then the Congress will understand what ‘governing at the consent of the people’ means. This applies to both worthless parties. The republicans better understand we want HC repealed or they’ll be out as well. It makes no difference if Barry vetoes it, they better come up w/ the votes to override the veto.
