A high school student from California is dead after falling 30 metres from a viewing platform into a rocky canyon at the Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver.
The teenage boy reportedly fell from a viewing platform on the west side of the canyon at around 7 p.m. Sunday.
Rescue crews were able to reach the boy quickly, but he was not alive by the time they arrived, according to RCMP Inspector Davis Wendell.
"Emergency responders attended the scene and undertook a very difficult high-angle rescue attempt. Unfortunately the male in question had fallen to his death," said Wendell.
It then took several hours for them to remove his body from the deep canyon.
The fall was witnessed by dozens of the boy's classmates, and grief counsellors were sent to their hotel afterward.
The boy's age, name and school have not yet been released by police.

One scary bridge. I crossed it back in the 1960s when I was 6 years old with my parents.
Always.
Wins.
Sorry for the boy and his family.

Doing something silly, I'm guessing?
Not a fan of heights and that picture just gave me the heebie-jeebies. How sad for him and his family.
In December, I slipped on some ice I didn't see, fell 5 ft and lost a kidney and a spleen. Almost died.
One second of inattention can kill.
And when it comes to gravity, 32 ft/sec/sec, is a killer.

I don’t like heights either.
I always feel like I’m being sucked toward the edge.
No way would I cross that bridge!
Gave my mother the heebie jeebies too when we crossed it. For my dad it was like a stroll in the park. IIRC I took my cue from mom.
For a good stress test they could get everyone in the middle and start swinging it.
Me neither! Just looking at the bridge gives me the hibby jibbies

It was swinging quite enough for me ... :-)
My guess is that the kid was clowning around, climbed to the top of the fence and lost his balance and fell over it.
Death by foolish behavior; Most likely egged on by his friends that will be haunted by his death for the rest of their lives.
yeah still photos don’t do it justice :)
Yikes. RIP.
Always.
Wins.
But sometimes we survive it:
SNIP.. .. .In 1999, a mother dropped her 18-month-old daughter off the bridge. The child survived with only bruises and scratches after some branches broke her fall. Police investigated allegations of criminal negligence in the case, but no charges were ever laid.
I’ve crossed it several times and it is quite exciting. I’m sure the kid was messing around. I feel for his friends and family.
Lol! That’s how I felt when at the GC! I wanted to sweep up all the loose gravel underfoot before I went to take a peek.
