Hispanics abandon Arizona, fleeing economy, immigration law
Christian Science Monitor - Yahoo ^ | 06/10/10 | Husna Haq

Arizona’s hard-hitting immigration law is driving Hispanics out of the state weeks before the controversial law goes into effect.

Although concrete figures are not available, anecdotal evidence suggests Hispanics, both legal residents and illegal immigrants, are starting to flee.

Schools in Hispanic neighborhoods are reporting abnormal enrollment drops, and businesses that serve Hispanics also report that business is down, according to a USA Today report published Wednesday.

The report suggests that the immigration law is compounding demographic trends that have already significantly curtailed illegal immigration during the past two years. The bad economy has been the primary deterrent to many Hispanic immigrants seeking to enter Arizona, says Jeffrey Passel, a demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington.

“If you have a bad economy and a hostile environment, then that’s likely to cause people to think twice about coming, and possibly even to leave,” Mr. Passel says.

Arizona’s new immigration law requires that police conducting routine traffic stops or other checks ask people about their immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that they're in the country illegally.

The law also makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally or to disrupt traffic when hiring day laborers, regardless of a worker's immigration status. It would also become a crime for illegal immigrants to solicit work.

Critics contend the law could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. It could also force an exodus of scared immigrants – legal and illegal. Nearly 100,000 illegal immigrants left Arizona after it passed a 2007 law that penalized businesses that hired them, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

“And to all of the “intelligentsia” who want to see America’s population reduced by 25 million immediately (and are having back room deals to reduce medical to the elderly, SSAN, pensions, etc.), accomplish this in one fell swoop by deporting ALL illegals first!”

NO WAY!! Those damned seniors are likely to be REPUBLICAN voters. The idea is to kill them off and replace them with Mexicans-—the new BLACK race!!!

Maybe if we weren’t taxed so much for unending welfare for anchor babies, we AMERICANS could afford to have more children.

Good point. The article implies Hispanics = Illegals. Poor choice of wording.

“I hope they’re all going to San Francisco.”

If so - I hope “they wear flowers in their hair.”

That old hippy song is hilarous. He sings about gentle people in SF. The joke is violent crime is pretty high in SF.

I strongly doubt that there is an exodus of legal residents. More likely, this is evidence of higher numbers of illegals than thought or admitted.

Typical liberal (the report) blurring the issue. Probably a couple of legal Hispanics move in the typical American way of looking for something better elsewhere. So, the Libs add them to the mix of hundreds of illegals bailing out and say "legals are fleeing as well" as if they were in equal amounts. Total B/S.

I don’t know about that. It might help but I think the problem goes beyond one of finances. You have men and women waiting longer and longer to get married with children more and more being viewed as an inconvenience or they are too much work to raise. Dropping taxes won’t make us a more moral people and change our perception of see children as a blessing instead of a curse.

No reason for legals to leave. Wow, look at the name of the “reporter” on this. And it’s CS Monitor, enough said.

If we drive the illegals out who will keep the fertility rate of America at the minimal 2.1 children per family to keep us from losing population? Illegals have to do the children creating American women aren’t willing to do! LOL!

They seem to be doing a great job in Chicago. In my travels through the Little Village neighborhood on the south side, which is an almost all Hispanic area, I see a significantly higher number of pregnant Hispanic women ready to drop a newly minted citizen, compared to neighborhoods of other ethnicities.

more jobs for legals, higher pay, they should have an influx not exodus.

“Will hospitals start to operate in the red? Or will there be a slump, as the libs claim - because “undocumented workers contribute so much”.”

There won’t be a labor problem.

With 10% unemployment and a slight raise in wages, Arizona will have all the workers they want.

Darn. That was fast.
I’d say Gov. Brewer has a lock on re-election as long as she wants it...

“they are all moving to either colorado or california is my guess.”

There should be PSA’s run on TV telling them where the sanctaury cities are. Direct them to the cities and states that boycott Arizona.

All illegals can go back home or go to a sanctuary city.

Send them all to the same one. All illegals go to Tacoma. Next year everybody to Austin. They won't mind having their public schools and hospitals flooded.

Post the personal home addresses of the officials that boycott AZ or have made the cities sanctuaries.

Maybe, if we stop subsidizing other people’s kids, those of use who pay the taxes will be able to afford to have children?

I've been watching the Tejas border and reporting illegal activity at blueservo.com

They have about 20 cameras on border crossing "hot spots" that you can watch and report illegals

I refuse to believe that honest Hispanics are against the Arizona law. If they are against it then they are a problem! I am of Italian and Polish descent (mind you, I am full AMERICAN, not hyphenated!) but if Italians or Polish people entered this country illegally I would be VERY ANGRY and would never support them.
