(HHS) Panel votes to keep restrictions on gay blood donations
The Washington Times ^ | June 11, 2010 | Cheryl Wetzstein

Following two days of testimony, a federal panel Friday voted against recommending changes to ease the current blood donation restrictions for gay men, saying more research was needed to help “create a road map forward” for future change.

By a 9-6 vote, members of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability agreed to continue the current donor policy which rejects blood donations from any man who has had sex with another man — a category know as "MSM" — even once in the past 33 years.

Gay rights groups and others say the 25-year-old policy is needlessly discriminatory, and the American Red Cross and other blood-collecting groups support a shorter deferral policy, down to as little as 12 months. But blood-user groups lobbied to keep the current policy, saying further research is needed.

The panel’s nonbinding recommendations will be brought to another panel led by Dr. Howard Koh, HHS assistant secretary of health. HHS recommendations will then go through the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulatory process, said Jerry Holmberg, executive secretary for the panel.

Until they stop having unprotected sex in bathrooms and any other area they can sneak off to, and until they start showing they are living a clean lifestyle then I say they shouldn’t be allowed to donate blood. They just will infect others with their sicknesses and that is not right.

only a 9-6 vote on matters of extreme concern to public health? And the Supreme Court hardly ever does better than 5-4 on matters of personal freedom. I’m hangin’ by a thread, here, man!

Agreed, it should have unanimous or nearly so.

I know the libs don’t care if they kill a few extra Americans in the name of diversity, but is the political symbol of giving gay blood to healthy people worth the ObamaCare cost of treating more HIV patients for however long it takes for the death panels to decide we’ve spent enough on them?

I’m sure it would be a strain, but they should go ahead and accept all donations from homos, just make sure the transfusions go back into homos.

Maybe it wouldn’t be that much of as strain. They are soooo proud of announcing their sexual orientation to the rest of us, they should be proud to have it marked on their donations and health care admissions forms.

Gay blood banks would be as popular as Air America...and America would have the same amount of use for them ...none.

I used to work as for the Red Cross.
The guidelines for donating blood are very strict and should remain so.

>I’m sure it would be a strain, but they should go ahead and accept all donations from homos, just make sure the transfusions go back into homos.<

Or why not have “progressive”, politically correct blood banks that would take blood from homosexual males (and IV drug users...we don’t want to hurt their feelings either) that all Liberals would be required to get their blood from, and sodomite-free blood banks for rational people.

If one can’t be happy in giving blood then why bother giving it?

Gays will get the best of care. They are some of Obamas chosen people. Its old people, the mentally retarded (yes I said retarded)the cronically ill such as cancer patients and conservatives that have to worry.
