UberFatbodies, gangbangers and/or retards are not the kind of individuals I want behind rifles, driving tanks or jumping out of airplanes.

Opps. I saw link only and times and jumped to a conclusion.

You can’t post excerpts from the Navy Times?

So , it's a good thing BP poked a hole in an oil/volcano to trigger the end of the world.

We got a whole crop of bad kids that need to be ploughed under.

Too bad, we have to get screwed too.

Maybe we can use it to plug the leak, wouldn’t that be something?

...if we went back to GWB’s policy of letting felons in.

Say again? When exactly did GWB allow felons in the military? Without checking, it seems it was the 80's when that was shut down. Except for the Marines (back then), they figured they could still make a contributing member of society out of a felon. I'm pretty sure now, even the Marines turn away felons.

Here is the problem. The thugs and degenerates of our society are allowed to proliferate while the best in our nation are wounded or killed in wars. Perhaps it would be better to take those 90% in Philly and use them for cannon fodder. It would be one of the quickest ways to improve society.

too uneducated

Charles Murray has data indicating that only 7% of all Black children in America are born to mothers with IQs of 100 or greater.

With the weapons systems [and medical systems and communications systems and even the logistical systems] becoming as sophisticated as they are in the 21st Century, it's very, very difficult to find productive work in the modern military which can be performed by folks with 2-digit IQs.

The group wants state and federal funding for pre-kindergarten programs that it says give children a solid foundation for academic and personal success.

It's been shown repeatedly (and then some) that pre-kindergarten does not change intellectual outcomes. This sounds like a bunch angling for government grants.

That said, the 90% figure may be roughly accurate. I think the military has not been taking anyone below the 30th percentile on the entrance exam for some years now. I imagine that this exclusion, plus felons and physically unfit, could keep out a lot of people.

Items that disqualify you from joining the Navy.

1. Prior trouble with the law
2. Tatoos
3. Overweight
4. Drugs (pee test)
5. Basic knowledge exam (general knowledge for an 8th grader)

If they are talking about the inner city, that would make perfect sense.

Here are a couple of links to get you started..
http://www.palmcenter.org/press/dadt/releases/military_enlistment_of_felons_has_doubled (from back in 2007—has link to one of the studies on it)

From April 2009:
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/04/19/Army-stops-issuing-drug-felony-waivers/UPI-27951240164494/

It was in the first few months he was in office, but I don’t recall exact date.

thanks for the links. It is always so much better to use links someone else provides.

here btw is the answer to why it was stopped, per your link

” The economic downturn has improved the quality of U.S. Army recruits, and the service has stopped accepting felons and drug abusers, officials said.”

Without checking, it seems it was the 80's when that was shut down.

It started up again under GWB so they could miss recruitment goals by less (it wasn't just the record-high bonuses and benefits promised).

I'm pretty sure now, even the Marines turn away felons.

Yes...it stopped <90 days after the new Administration started. Army, too.

One wonders where all that money goes that is supposed to be used for educating the children of Philadelphia. Education system needs a good house cleaning.

Since they are from Philly, this might not be a bad thing.

I’m wondering if the weight issue could be addressed with a modified or additional basic training program. An 18 year old can slim down and beef up fairly quickly (compared to us old farts, anyway). I’d think a program of 4-6 weeks of PT and monitored diet prior to basic/boot would bring a lot of those recruits up to standard.

Of course, I’m assuming the military’s recruiting needs would be such that the extra time, cost, and effort were worth it. If a service branch can get what they need from the 25% that do pass muster, then so be it.

Well, yeah, but that’s not the spin. From the story:

“The group wants state and federal funding for pre-kindergarten programs that it says give children a solid foundation for academic and personal success.”

This is just a shill for more spending, federal control and union power.
