Judas Must Have Been a Republican
American Thinker ^ | June 22, 2010 | Deborah B. Sloan

There is no greater injustice than punishment of a man for doing something good, and no more loathsome cowardice than when those responsible for defending good sacrifice their cause to accommodate an uncompromising evil. But this type of betrayal is not uncommon for the Republican leadership, and it happened again last week in Congress.

Thursday's House committee hearings with BP CEO Tony Hayward consisted mostly of the empty political grandstanding one would expect from this type of proceedings, characterized by Mark Levin as Soviet-style show trials. There was an exception, however, when Representative Joe Barton spoke out against the Obama regime for extorting $20 billion from BP -- without due process -- to be distributed by an Obama appointee as compensation not only to Gulf residents harmed by the oil leak, but also to those left unemployed by Obama's moratorium by fiat on all offshore drilling operations. This was not to say that the Gulf residents shouldn't be compensated, but that the manner in which the funds were expropriated is reprehensible, and it is outrageous for the government to force a private corporation to finance a moratorium imposed by the president.

” But that contradicts the ‘BP is a victim’ theme that some Republicans want to go with. It’s just suicide to defend BP when they agreed to pay for the spill and are not even defending themselves regarding it. “

You can expose the “SHAKEDOWN” without defending BP.

Smart: Pointing out that Obama overstepped his Constitutional power by strong arming BP.

Stupid: Apologizing to BP for it.

Apologizing to BP is like apologizing to a notorious armed robber because the police roughed him up during the arrest. It distracts from the point you are trying to make.

The 3 Cowards!!

BP is an Obama-supporter, having given him over $1 million in campaign donations. Now Obama is shaking BP down for $20 billion. Frankly, BP is responsible for the oil spill. Why should the GOP defend BP? Why should anyone in the GOP apologize to BP? BP should stand as an example to other companies who think that by giving money to Democrats, they will be immune from attacks from Democrats.

"Let's not lose it over this one. Defending BP is political suicide"

Yes, but nobody was defending BP.

"and it is the democrats dream that Republicans go for it. They already are trying to claim all Republicans think BP is the victim here."

You appear to have missed the issue here. The Congressman was not talking about BP: he was talking about our Constitution basic principles that were violated in the process of handling BP.

If someone commits murder during breakfast, nobody discussed what the murderer and the judge think of breakfast: it is merely incidental. Obama has once again wounded the Constitution, and that it happened in his dealings with BP is also coincidental and irrelevant.

It is a sad fact that (i) most people in this country, including so-called conservatives, are so inflicted with victimhood mentality that they take sides rather than stand on principles; and (ii) the GOP leader are not only any better, they assume that all of us lack principles, and apologize where they should stand firm. Instead of apologizing, they sould've enunciated the principles better and explained what Congressman's remarks were really about (not BP at all).

As it stands, the GOP played into the hands of Obama. It is because even Republicans do not stand on principle that we have have socialist anti-Americans running the country.

Defending BP is political suicide and it is the democrats dream that Republicans go for it. They already are trying to claim all Republicans think BP is the victim here.

We can't use the mainstream media for a nuanced message like dems can - so you're probably right on this sickoflibs.

Even if dems are doing a shakedown - even if it's a slush fund - we have to get on board until it's "unexpectedly" discovered that the bulk of the money went to dem victim groups - and not to the majority of people who suffered from the spill...

Should we also act shocked and "oh so surprised" when that happens?

That is exactly the right approach, remember there are many real victims here and BP is not one of them.

Republicans really were handed a present with this spill, with the public disapproving of Obama on this even more than Bush with Katrina. Why some want to blow this by confirming MSNBC’s daily theme is beyond me.

Is having victims of this spill wait years for lawsuits to go through the courts even practical?

Even though Joe Varton’s underlying point is valid, the oil spill up until the gave the Democrats a soundbite, was owned by the Obama administration.

But he insisted on giving them that soundbite, which will be used to bludgeon Republicans consistently until November.

I wish he had used better judgment. This could be a macaca moment; I hope not.

Barton apologizes, now McCrystal apologizes. Geraldine Ferraro bit the dust when she spoke out, and even BJ’s “it’s a fairy tale” came under attack.

Folks, this is what living under a tyranny is like- the LACK of freedom to voice honest opinions- and why does it seem like every time the WH shakes down someone, it is out of bounds to say so?

We got a fricking, bloomin’ dictatorship on our hands. And those of us who remember FREEDOM OF SPEECH are extremely P.O.’d about it.

The Republicans in the House & Senate are so accustomed to total subservience, that they don’t even know HOW to respond to evil.

Now I just heard Limbaugh state that it is possible that either the Democrats in D.C. will “deem” amnesty passed, or Obama will do an “executive order” . If amnesty passes, you can forget about this country, because no matter who is in power, chain migration will give us 60-80 million unskilled, illiterate slobs within 5-10 years. Do you think Obama or Pelosi would DARE pull this, if they feared the GOP in D.C.?

I don't want my congressman or senators to "get on board," even temporarily, with BP paying for Obama shutting down drilling and exploration. They should, however, speak carefully to make it clear that they do expect BP to pay for the damage it caused.

Yes. Obama wants to tie GOP to “evil oil giants” in general. No need to play into his hands.

Watching Obama destroy one corporation after another, setting precedence after precedence, to further the Fascist party line, is not a winning move IMO.

There are plenty of Democrats on the coast, including political party office holders, who have come out against this ignorant president on the issue of the moratorium on drilling, including B.P.

We’re not losing folks by defending B.P. on principle IMO.

Sure you’ll get a wing-nut call once in a while, but we get wing-nut calls on almost every subject. Do we avoid every touchy issue then? No.

Talk common sense and solid policy, and good people will flock to you.

Obama is catching hell from every quarter these days. It’s no time to avoid providing a reasoned alternative voice IMO. This is perhaps the most important time to do it in decades.
