Leadership: The summoning of the president's hand-picked Afghan commander to the White House to explain a critical magazine profile does not bode well. Are we looking for scapegoats or victory?
To some, it evokes President Truman's meeting with Gen. Douglas MacArthur on Wake Island during the Korean War, shortly before Truman sacked the general who believed that in war there's no substitute for victory, a word that doesn't appear on administration teleprompters these days.
Gen. Stanley McChrystal has been summoned to the White House to explain a profile to be published in Rolling Stone on Friday. The piece contains unflattering criticism of administration officials and policy in a war that candidate Obama said had to be won in a place we should be fighting.
We've become accustomed to rhetorical flourishes by the president that end up meaning not much. That apparently was one of them, along with the part about McChrystal being hand-picked.
In the piece, their first meeting was described as more of a blind date than a strategy talk between commander in chief and commander in the field. It quotes an adviser to McChrystal dismissing the early meeting with Obama as a "10-minute photo op."
"Obama clearly didn't know anything about him, who he was. The boss was pretty disappointed," the adviser told the magazine. This blind date appears to be ending badly.
McChrystal clearly still smarts over Obama's Hamlet-like hand-wringing over the general's request for more troops, particularly when Obama called McChrystal on the carpet last fall for speaking too bluntly about his desire for more troops. "I found that time painful," McChrystal said in the article.

You can say that again
Man, this is really getting beyond any nightmare that we have ever imagined. The SOB cannot get it in his small socialist brain that America is not inner city Chicago and the American people are not the welfare queens of inner City Chicago.
Can you say Thug? I knew you could
Yes, and that idiot MacArthur went to the Yalu River and lost the war as the Chinese "volunteers," sent the American soldiers into a panic retreat because of a stupid delusional General.
His no substitute for Victory has led to a nuclear armed North Korea which had been defeated but saved by MacArthur's decision that provoked the Chinese. That is his legacy.
Thug, thug, thug, ..... :)
WOW, is this your left wing distorted version of the Korean War?
Obama seems intent on driving competent folks out of government and civilian jobs and replacing them with know-nothing bureaucrats and street people. The end result is a black hole where the US economy and land once was. The vacuum will be filled by Mexico, China and Canada (the latter, only if we are lucky).
I was there you guys haven’t a clue.

Don’t know if you like country music but Mark Collie had a song out on one if his albums
It was dedicated to his father who went in the army in 41 and came home with a silver star—he was also wounded in Korea at Inchon but went back in the field in 51
He was also sent home from Vietnam in 73 with 100% disability and in his later years dies in a VA hospital
Anyway he was IN Korea also seems he had a different opinion on the issue
Here is the lyric from that part of the song
“He took a bullet in the hip outside Inchon but was back in the field by 51—he said Douglas MacArthur was a man among men and Harry S Truman was a horses’ end”
Song also has a great tune .
it appears to me that anytime any American general or leader is doing well in this war, this muslim president will find a reason to cut him to pieces....
You presume he has America’s best interests at heart and he does NOT!
Obama does NOT want America to prevail, he wants America knocked down a peg.
Socialist, non-capitalist, weak, second class, anti-industirial country.
“I was there you guys havent a clue.”
One thing that is perfectly clear is that MacArthur was a military genius.
There are several possible reasons that he went to the Yalu. One is that his intelligence officer, General Willoughby, filtered the information that M was getting.
Another is this:
“But MacArthur intelligence officer, General Willoughby, dismissed all those intelligence reports.
Then again, during the war, Army intelligence and the CIA, told Willoughby and MacArthur that the Chinese were sending soldiers into North Korea.
Chiina was actually purposely letting some of their intelligence officers be captured, trying to get the US to back away from the Chinese border.
But Willoughby had publicly said there were no Chinese in North Korea, so he ignored all reports saying there were, and MacArthur backed his staff officer.”
We do know that MacArthur was fiercely loyal to the “Bataan Gang,” including Willoughby. We also know that W resigned under somewhat mysterious circumstances. Scuttlebutt was that somebody finally busted W in a way that M could not explain away.
Another theory is that he was trying to force Truman to take on the Chinese and use nuclear weapons. Had Truman done so, we would be living in a much safer world today.
