Steinem criticizes Palin for using feminist brand

Gloria Steinem, an icon of the women’s movement, has criticized Sarah Palin for trying to brand herself as a feminist.

In an interview with @katiecouric, Steinem argued that a woman who chooses not to have an abortion can call herself a feminist, but “you can't be a feminist who says other women can't have an abortion."

To be sure, Palin’s role as a feminist has been an issue ever since she made history by becoming the first woman to run on the Republican national ticket. Unlike the Democratic side of feminism, however, Palin is a conservative and opposes many of the issues such as abortion and gender rights that fueled the women’s movement.

Palin, who is strongly anti-abortion, reignited the debate over who could call themselves a feminist and what that means in a May 14 speech for the Susan B. Anthony List, a PAC for antiabortion female congressional candidates.

Using grizzly bears as a metaphor, Palin seemed to imply that feminism need not apply only apply to liberal supporters of abortion rights. Conservative PTA moms can be empowered in their positions as well and can call themselves feminists, she argued.

Hey Gloria,

Your baby killing campaign has only served to undermine women, by making it seem they are sex objects to be used without consequence.

It's just a misunderstanding. Glo really meant to say that Sarah is not a radical feminist.

fem·i·nism  –noun
1. the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. 2. ( sometimes initial capital letter ) an organized movement for the attainment of such rights for women. 3. feminine character
(from dictionary.com)

Radical feminism is a "current"[1] within feminism that focuses on the theory of patriarchy as a system of power that organizes society into a complex of relationships based on an assumption of "male supremacy"[1] used to oppress women. Radical feminism aims to challenge and to overthrow patriarchy by opposing standard gender roles and what they see as male oppression of women, and calls for a radical reordering of society (from Wiki)

The original women's movement is all about choice... at least until you make a choice they don't agree with.

What little credibility the women's movement had was lost when they stood by and said nothing while Clinton ran over multiple women.

Political labels are admittedly subjective, but Palin branding herself a feminists a lot more plausible than Obama labeling himself “not a socialist”.

All to pathetic. . .When Thelma and Louise drove off the cliff; Gloria's brand of Feminism went with them. Years in a free fall; but surely Gloria, by now can identify the wreckage. . .and what arose from it. (Am guessing, Guru Gloria, never realized what was on board with Thelma and Louise; and so has never looked; nor realized the change after the the fall.)

No, it doesn’t,

but hot often makes men stupid in response to the minimal chance of “gettin’ some of that”.

Rush has said that abortion is the sacrament of the religion of feminism. I think Steinem's quote shows he is on the mark.

The other bottom line here; is that 'Feminism' was for Liberals Only. . .No others need apply; nor consider themselves in Gloria's sisterhood. The Feminists for sure did not consider any non-Lib - no matter their accomplishments in a 'male world - 'one of them'. Feminism morphed in it's free fall w/o Gloria - and so she imagines in her frozen-in-time ignorance; that she can challenge Palin's credentials.

Pathetic and almost funny; Gloria and Katie sharing dialog and a 'fantasizing' - because yes, as you say. . .there IS a new sheriff in town and she carries a 'concealed weapon'. . .

The original women's movement had a broad range of people in it, but over the years the ugly leftest wackos took it over and turned it into nothing more than a arm of of far political machine, rubber stamping anything and everything the democrats wanted.

Leftist women trying to tell us who “real women” are. Just as leftist blacks have been telling us for forty years who the “real blacks” are. It’s just political manipulation.

It’s time to retire this irrelevant skank. For decades whenever some so-called womens issue would be discussed, the nation’s virtually all radical-feminist news agencies would run to Steinem to get some kind of comment. It was easy to guess Steinem’s reaction: if the person or issue involved was pro-life, Steinen would be against it. These idiot reporters tried to make readers believe Steinem represented the views of the nation’s women instead of just a small coterie of anti-male/anti-America leftists.

"attractive"

My opinion is her worth to society peaked when she posed as a Playbody bunny. At least she looked attractive in the outfit. It's been downhill for her since.
