Alas, times have changed.
Now we have humane ways of waging war that are governed by such advanced developments as the Geneva Convention and Rules of Engagement.
For the U.S., at this juncture in history in the Islamic Middle East, it’s a lose-lose proposition.
More importantly, you can’t “give” people “freedom”. There can be no democracy where individual rights are not valued.
IMHO, the problem is not with the Geneva Convention, but with our interpretation of it. If I understand correctly, our opponents, not being a uniformed national army have no protection from the GC, nor does anyone providing them support. They are bandits and partisans, not soldiers, subject to brutal interrogations and swift executions.
Second, why should we give a d@mn about Afghanis or Iraqis? We’re not there for them, we’re there for us... Stop trying to “give them freedom” and put in someone competent and nasty enough to keep a lid on things for a few decades.
