The return of Adnan Shukrijumah
By Michelle Malkin June 30, 2010 05:53 PM
SNIPPET: Adnan Shukrijumah. Does the name ring a bell? It should if you have been a regular reader of this blog since its inception in 2004.
In August 2004, I reported on the FBI search for the high-profile fugitive and al Qaeda operative billed as the next Mohammed Atta. Theres been a $5 million bounty on his head for six years. He has been reportedly spotted at or near the Mexican border and allegedly has met with Latin American gangs. In 2007, his name came up in wiretaps related to the busted NYC/JFK bombing plot.
Well, hes still on the loose. And hes still apparently hard at work on global jihad.

In an exclusive interview to be broadcast tonight on ABC World News with Charles Gibson and Nightline, former undercover operative Elie Assaad says he spotted and became suspicious of Atta in early 2001, when he was sent by the FBI to infiltrate a small mosque outside Miami.
Atta was there with Adnan Shukrujuman, an al Qaeda fugitive who now has a $5 million U.S. reward on his head. "There was something wrong with these guys," Assaad, a 36-year-old Catholic native of Lebanon who pretended to be an Islamic extremist, says.......

Shukrijumah, though born in Saudi Arabia, is believed to be a citizen of Yemen. His ethnic heritage is part Yemeni, part Guyanese. He has some family in Guyana and is believed to have a passport from Guyana. He may also have a Saudi, Canadian or Trinidad passport, the release said. El Shukrijumah is described as 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-5, weighing 132 pounds or more, with a Mediterranean complexion, black hair, black eyes and, at times, a beard. His aliases include: Adnan G. Al Qaeda Operative Linked To Failed Subway Terror Plot
##
Counterterrorism officials say that “an elusive and feared senior Qaeda operative” met with one of the suspects in last fall’s thwarted subway terror plot.
According to the AP, “Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn have named Shukrijumah in a draft terrorism indictment,
***but yesterday the Justice Department was still discussing whether to cite his role. Some officials feared that the extra attention might hinder efforts to capture him.”
In September, the federal and local authorities raided homes in Queens, due to concerns of a Madrid-style terror attack. The feds later charged Najibullah Zazi, a former Queens resident and lower Manhattan coffee vendor, and two of his associates, with terrorism.
Zazi admitted ties to Al Qaeda and, earlier this year, pleaded guilty to a “martyrdom” plan for suicide bombings on numerous subway lines.
According to the Times, “The elusive senior Qaeda figure with whom Mr. Zazi had contact is the Saudi-born Adnan G. el-Shukrijumah, 34, long described by law enforcement officials as a hardened operative who was all the more feared because of his fluency in English and knowledge of New York City...
The State Department offered a reward of up to $5 million several years ago for information leading directly to the capture of Mr. Shukrijumah, but he has managed to avoid capture since the F.B.I. issued an alert for him in 2003.
Mr. Shukrijumah was identified as a senior terrorism figure by Khalid Shaikh Mohammed during his intensive interrogation, and concern about him grew with the discovery that he had received flight training in the United States about the same time as the 9/11 hijackers.
A bulletin warning that he might try to cross American borders with a Saudi, Canadian or Trinidadian passport was issued in 2003.”

''I remember him telling me once that he felt like those people were his family too,'' his mother said. At the time, his family said, neither they nor Adnan were aware that the charity they supported -- Global Relief Fund -- was allegedly involved in funding terrorist organizations. About the same time, the family befriended a man named Imran Farooq Mandhai -- who later would become the genesis of the FBI's suspicions about Adnan. Mandhai, now serving nearly 12 years in prison for plotting to blow up power plants and other South Florida facilities, first approached Gulshair's father for spiritual leadership. The family described him as a follower of little intellect but lovable. -- "FBI sees terror; family sees good son Ex-resident of Miramar being sought in terror case ," BY DAVID KIDWELL AND LARRY LEBOWITZ (Natalie McNeal contributed), The Miami Herald, 03/31/2003
Well, the Shukrijumah thing ties into Jamaat ul Fuqra, which while led by a Pakistani is an org made up largely of American and Caribbean black converts to Islam.
The racial element I guess is why, in spite of ul Fuqra's involvement in the 1998 US embassy bombings, in spite of all the training camps, bombings, murders, etc, that the government and press pretty much avoid mentioning them.
If recent press accounts are correct, Shukrijumah is in northern Pakistan and is still plotting attacks against the continental US on behalf of al Qaeda.
Cindy’s Opinion: This subject can easily be anywhere in the world. He is a prime example of a global jihadist.

Charges Unsealed Against Five Alleged Members of al Qaeda Plot to Attack the United States and the United Kingdom
WASHINGTONThe Justice Department today announced charges against five members of an al Qaeda plot to attack targets in the United States and United Kingdom. The charges reveal that the plot against New Yorks subway system uncovered in September 2009 involving Colorado resident Najibullah Zazi was directed by senior al Qaeda leadership in Pakistan, and was also directly related to a scheme by al Qaeda plotters in Pakistan to use Western operatives to attack a target in the United Kingdom.
The superseding indictment, which was returned and unsealed today in the Eastern District of New York, charges the following defendants each with several terrorism violations: Adnan El Shukrijumah, also known as Hamad; Adis Medunjanin, also known as Mohammad; Abid Naseer; Tariq Ur Rehman; and a fifth defendant known as Ahmad, Sohaib, or Zahid. Each of the defendants faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
According to the indictment, court filings and plea proceedings in the case, the plot involving Zazi was organized by Saleh al-Somali, Rashid Rauf, and El Shukrijumah, who were then-leaders of al Qaedas external operations program dedicated to terrorist attacks in the United States and other Western countries.
Between September and December 2008, Saleh and El Shukrijumah recruited Zazi and Zazis co-conspirators, Zarein Ahmedzay, and Medunjanin, to conduct suicide bombings in New York City using improvised explosive devices made from supplies such as hydrogen peroxide, acetone, flour, and oil. According to the indictment and court filings, Saleh communicated with Zazi through Ahmad, an al Qaeda facilitator in Peshawar, Pakistan. In early September 2009, after Zazi constructed the detonator explosives for the attack, he e-mailed with Ahmad in Pakistan about the proper ingredients for the flour-based main charge explosive. Zazi pleaded guilty to his role in the New York subway plot on February 22, 2010; Ahmedzay similarly pleaded guilty on April 23, 2010.
The indictment adds formal charges against El Shukrijumah, a 34-year-old native of Saudi Arabia who served as one of the leaders of al Qaedas external operations program. According to the indictment, El Shukrijumah recruited Zazi, Ahmedzay, and Medunjanin to return to the United States and conduct terrorist attacks there. El Shukrijumah has been wanted by the FBI for several years and is the subject of a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. He remains at large.
The investigation by authorities in the United States and United Kingdom has revealed that Ahmad was also communicating with Manchester-based, United Kingdom resident Naseer. Naseer, like Zazi, was in Peshawar, Pakistan in November 2008, according to the court filings.
After returning to the United Kingdom, Naseer sent messages back and forth to the same e-mail account that Ahmad was using to communicate with the American-based al Qaeda cell on behalf of Saleh, the indictment and court filings allege. In the messages, Naseer used coded language to refer to different types of explosives. At the culmination of the plot, in early April 2009, Naseer, again using coded language, told Ahmad that he was planning a large wedding for numerous guests between April 15 and 20, 2009, and that Ahmad should be ready. Notably, Ahmad and Zazi had agreed on a similar code to mean the attack was ready to be executed, and Zazi e-mailed Ahmad that the marriage is ready just before he left Colorado for New York in early September 2009.
On April 8, 2009, Naseer and Rehman were arrested in the United Kingdom on terrorism charges. In connection with the arrests, U.K. authorities conducted searches of the plotters homes, where they found large quantities of flour and oil, as well as surveillance photographs of public areas in Manchester and maps of Manchesters city center posted on the wall, with one of the locations from the surveillance photographs highlighted. Naseer is currently in custody in the United Kingdom. The United States intends to seek his extradition to face trial. Rehman is not in custody.
The superseding indictment also adds new charges to the pending indictment against Medunjanin. Specifically, the indictment charges that, in furtherance of the New York plot, and, after Zazi was already in custody, Medunjanin attempted to crash his car into another car on the Whitestone Expressway in Queens, N.Y. as a last attempt to carry out a suicide attack on American soil. Just before crashing his car, Medunjanin called 911 to identify himself and announce his intentions. Medunjanin remains in federal custody in the United States. No trial date has been set.
Medunjanin is charged with conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction; conspiring to commit murder abroad; providing and conspiring to provide material support to al Qaeda; receiving military training from al Qaeda; committing and attempting to commit an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries; and using firearms and a destructive device in relation to the above offenses.
Shukrijumah and Ahmad are each charged with providing and conspiring to provide material support to al Qaeda; conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction; assisting the receipt of military training; committing and attempting to commit an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries; and using firearms in relation to the same offenses. Ahmad is also charged together with Naseer and Rehman with providing and conspiring to provide material support to al Qaeda and conspiracy to use a destructive device in relation to the U.K. branch of the plot.
These charges underscore the global nature of the terrorist threat we face. They further reflect the effectiveness of mutual investigations and cooperation with our global partners in disrupting terrorism threats. I thank our counterparts in the United Kingdom for their assistance in this investigation, said David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
As todays charges demonstrate, we will not rest in our pursuit of those responsible for plotting terrorist attacks, said Loretta E. Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Ms. Lynch also expressed her gratitude to the law enforcement personnel, both domestic and foreign, who took part in the investigation.
FBI Executive Assistant Director Sean Joyce, National Security Branch said, The threat posed by terrorists around the world is a threat to security and a threat to the rule of law. The transnational nature of this conspiracy, and its connection to plots targeted outside the U.S. underscores the importance of international coordination and collaboration to do everything we can to ensure public safety.
The charges announced today illustrate the coordinated and persistent attempts by our adversaries to harm American citizens, said FBI New York Acting Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos. FBI personnel around the world are dedicated to working with our international law enforcement partners to uncover and thwart attacks.
The investigation is being conducted by the New York, Denver, and Miami FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces, as well as the Washington Field Office of the FBI. The North West Counter Terrorism Unit and Greater Manchester Police Department have also provided significant assistance.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Eastern District of New York, with assistance from the Counterterrorism Section of the Justice Departments National Security Division. The U.S. Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Florida has also provided assistance in the investigation.
The public is reminded that an indictment contains mere allegations and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Top al Qaeda leader linked to 5 Americans on trial in Pakistan
By BILL ROGGIO
April 17, 2010 4:42 PM
Pakistani prosecutors claim that five Americans currently on trial for attempting to join al Qaeda were in contact with a top leader of the terror group.
The five Americans are said to have made contact with Qari Saifullah Akhtar, the leader of the radical Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami and the commander of al Qaedas Brigade 313. Prosecutors presented evidence, including phone calls, emails, and other documents that linked Akhtar and the five would-be terrorists, according to Dawn.
Akhtar recruited the five Americans after watching their videos posted on YouTube, according to Pakistani police officials. Akhtar was able to obtain emails through the YouTube postings and encouraged the men to travel to Pakistan to join the jihad.
The five American Muslim men were detained in the city of Sargodha in Punjab province in December 2009 after a family member discovered they were missing and contacted the FBI. The five Americans have been identified as Umar Farooq, Waqar Hussain, Rami Zamzam, Ahmad Abdullah Mini, and Amman Hassan Yammer.

LAS VEGAS, NV
SNIPPET: The real end, however, came in a Minnesota Federal Court. Two weeks ago, the FBI arrested Abdow Munye Abdow for two counts of making false statements to a federal official. The FBI believes Abdow lied about his trip to Las Vegas, and a passenger he was with who was on the terrorism watch list.
The Nevada Highway Patrol pulled over Abdow and four other people on October 6, 2009 for speeding. Trooper Alan Davidson, a spokesperson for NHP, said the officer on the scene began asking questions.
SNIPPET: Davidson says the men had $4,000 split between them and that they were headed to San Diego for a wedding. They didnt have any clothes for the wedding. They didnt even know where they were staying, Davidson said.
When pressed, the driver, Cabdulaahi Faarax, said he was going to a wedding in San Diego, but he didnt know who was getting wed, Davidson said. The drivers story just didnt add up.
That driver, Faarax, was eventually run through the National Crime Information Center. Davidson says the name came back as positive on the terrorism watch list. When the name came up, NHP policy is to contact FBI, which the trooper on the scene did. Local FBI officials would not comment on the case, but indications are that the trooper was told to let the men leave.
SNIPPET: Media reports indicate the men may have been attempting to travel to Mexico through San Diego in order to fly to Somalia. There, a few of the men may have joined an Al-Qaida-connected terror resistance group.
