Sen. Orrin Hatch's decision to oppose Elena Kagan for a seat on the Supreme Court probably wasn't made in fear of the National Rifle Association's threat to senators that the group will take their votes on the nominee into consideration during endorsement time this election season.
Hatch already has an A+ rating from the gun group. But the moves by both parties -- Hatch's Friday announcement that he will vote "no" on Kagan and the NRA's Thursday announcement that it opposes Kagan and senators who vote for her risk their wrath -- are aimed at least in part at shoring up their conservative credentials with supporters.
For Hatch, he's already been warned that he could face the fate of fellow Utah Republican Sen. Bob Bennett, who was ousted during the state GOP's convention this spring. Hatch voted for Kagan as President Obama's solicitor general, a no-no for conservatives, but said now that the Supreme Court seat is a very different role than being the administration's top litigation attorney.
"All the evidence Senator Hatch has is that (Kagan) would allow her personal or political views drive her legal views. That is the definition of judicial activism something he has long opposed," Hatch spokeswoman Antonia Ferrier told Fox News.
Hatch may gain some credit for getting out in front on Kagan -- he's the first Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee to announce his no vote.
But the tough statement out of the nation's top gun lobby may not receive as warm a response from conservatives, who accuse the NRA of selling out, not only because of its late opposition to Kagan, but for what is perceived as its recent cozying up to Democrats on Capitol Hill.

Kagan needs to be an NRA scored vote.
They need to withdraw the REid endorsement if he votes for Kagan.
And guys, hate to say it, but everyone needs to remember the saying about military operations. “Amateurs study tactics,, professionals study logistics”. And in truth,,, nobody loses the logistics war, and then wins the real one.
That applies here big time. If they can destroy the 1st amendment, and the internet,, as they fully intend to do,,, guns are pretty much rendered useless. They can then mop us up a few at a time, in a million ways.
The first amendment allows organization, communication, and effective resistance. It’s extrememly amateurish of the NRA to think they are protecting the 2nd amendment, by being a sellout on the 1st,,,and by supporting the revolutionary democratic party.

NRA will not suppprt Kagan. That got more press than GOA. NRA is just one of many 2nd supporters: GOA, SAF, SAS, numerous websites, etc. Support who you want, hold NRAs feet to the fire, send them emails, etc., but you’ve got to admit, they have more influence than all the rest of those organizations combined.

You nailed it there. With so many of the RKBA cases in the courts the NRA needs to seriously reconsider its rating system for politicians to include their votes for judges. Someone like Reid who mouths support for the 2A in the Senate but then votes for anti-RKBA jurist like Kagan or Sotomayor does not deserve an endorsement.
NRA didn’t ask for this, the democrats cooked it up to make stupid people soil themselves and hold their breath until they turn blue. You haven’t turned blue yet, so make sure that you show all those nasty conservatives by refusing to vote in the next election. That’ll show ‘em.

A recent e-mail exchange between the NRA and myself regarding a possible endorsement of Harry Reid.
The NRA basically says that because Reid votes with them on the most gun rights issues, that they are going to back him, regardless of how he votes on other issues (voting to confirm Gun Banning zealots like Holder as AG or Supreme Court Nominees like Sotomeyer and Kagan) that directly effect gun owners and gun rights.
The NRA either fails to grasp or doesn’t care that a Supreme Court ruling can overturn all the “good deals” Harry Reid has done for them.

NRA-PVF has not contributed to Sen. Reid for reelection in this election cycle. However, as Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Reid has proven himself to be a supporter of our Second Amendment rights.
Early last year, Sen. Reid flatly stated that he would oppose any effort to reinstate an “assault weapons” ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future. And Sen. Reid was instrumental in Senate passage (and eventual enactment into law) of the “Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act” (PLCAA), which shut down reckless lawsuits against gun manufacturers and dealers, that attempted to hold them liable for the misuse of firearms by criminals. Sen. Reid also cosponsored S. 659 (PLCCA) in the 108th Congress and voted against “poison pill” amendments to it, including the Feinstein Amendment to ban so-called “assault weapons”, and the Kennedy Amendment that would have banned most hunting ammunition.
Sen. Reid voted for legislation that became law in 2006, to prohibit gun confiscation during states of emergency. He also voted for legislation to allow commercial airline pilots to be armed in the cockpit to protect their passengers and crew. In this congressional session, Sen. Reid voted for the Ensign Amendment to repeal the Washington D.C. gun ban and restore self-defense rights in our nation’s capital. He cosponsored similar legislation—S. 1414—in the 108th Congress. He also voted for an amendment to allow law-abiding citizens to carry firearms for self-defense in national parks and wildlife refuges. This federal policy change just took effect on February 22. In addition, Sen. Reid voted last year for the Thune-Vitter Amendment to provide national reciprocity for state Right-to-Carry permits. Sen. Reid also voted twice for the Wicker Amendment allowing Amtrak passengers to include firearms in their checked luggage. A vote on all of these amendments was made possible procedurally by Harry Reid in his capacity as Senate Majority Leader. Finally, Sen. It is my understanding that the NRA intends to endorse Sen. Harry Reid (D) in the Nevada general election for the US Senate.
Is this true? If so why?
Harry Reid may vote in favor of the occasional gun rights bill, but his overall record voting, such as his votes to confirm Eric Holder as the AG and to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the USSC are votes for gun control. By voting to install two gun control zealots, one as the chief law enforcement officer of the US and the other to a lifetime position on the Supreme Court, Harry Reid has shown his true colors, he has no regard for the US Constitution nor the 2nd Amendment.
I urge the ILA to rethink its endorsement of Harry Reid.
If the NRA decides to endose Harry Reid, I will not support an NRA endorsed canidate.
I have already decided to support Sharron Angle (R) in her bid for the Nevada Senate seat currently held by Harry Reid.
I have not decided on whether to renew my membership in the NRA, your endorsement of Harry Reid, a liberal progressive Democrat over a Conservative Republican challenger is troubling.
I understand the NRA is a single-issue (gun rights) organization but before your endorse someone you should review their entire voting record.
