O'Malley trails behind Ehrlich in Maryland

Republican challenger Robert Ehrlich now leads Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley in the rematch of their 2006 gubernatorial contest, according to a new poll released Friday.

Mr. Ehrlich has opened up a 3 percentage point lead over the Democratic governor in one of the nation's more liberal states, according to an automated survey of over 750 likely voters by the polling firm Magellan Strategies. It is the first poll to show the one-term former GOP governor ahead in the race.

According to the Magellan poll, Mr. Ehrlich was preferred by 46 percent of state voters to 43 percent for Mr. O'Malley, a close political ally of President Obama. About 4 percent of those polled preferred another candidate and 7 percent were undecided.

The spread was within the poll's 3.5 percent margin of error, but another finding suggested more political troubles for the Democratic incumbent. Only 41 percent of Maryland voters said they had a favorable opinion of the governor, compared to 45 percent with an unfavorable opinion. For Mr. Ehrlich, 51 percent of voters reported having a favorable opinion vs. 32 percent with a negative opinion.

Mr. O'Malley still claimed a slight edge with the state's crucial independent voter bloc, leading by a 38 percent to 34 percent margin, but nearly a third of the independent vote is either backing another candidate or is still up for grabs, according to the Magellan poll.

Mr. O'Malley ousted Mr. Ehrlich in 2006 by a 52 percent to 46 percent margin. The political reporting site CQToday.com rates Mr. O'Malley as a slight favorite to defeat Mr. Ehrlich again in November.

Of course, I want a Pubbie to win, but geesh, isn’t Maryland getting Ehrlich-fatigued? Aren’t there any other Republicans in Maryland? It seems like every election, h e r e ‘ s ................... Ehrlich.

Nobody who would meet your definition of “conservative” would have the slightest chance of being elected to statewide office in Maryland at all.

We do not need any more of Martin O’Moron. The best thing I can say about him is that he is not Parris Glendenning.

This is only his 3rd statewide election since 2002 (having won one and lost one). The only other prominent Republicans are the lone Congressman, Roscoe Bartlett (and he’s in his 80s) or Michael Steele. Wanna run Steele ? Didn’t think so.

Before the last election for governor Ehrlich appeared on the Tom Marr radio show ( an open forum for callers to participate ) and I decided To call in to the show to pose a question to Bob ,, as I am a regular caller on this program . The producer ,, Gary Sainthauer answers the phone calls and then puts you on hold til your turn comes to respond to the subject of the day which was Ehrlich's bid for reelection . I asked Gary the producer ,, since the Governor was not taking calls from the listening audience today would he please ask the governor why he has been silent about the 2000 illegals a week using our state Motor Vehicle Administration to provide them with starter documents and voter registration .

You guessed it ,,,,,,,,,, The Tom Marr Show would not put this question to him . Had Ehrlich taken on illegal immigration and challenged the states dems over this one issue I believe he would have won reelection .

Bob Ehrlich is a flaming RINO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Three percent.. bah, they can make that up with the dead voters in Baltimore.. It needs to be at least ten with an upward trend in October, they can’t even find that many illegals.

Yeah, we’re not exactly doing great in the farm team category in MD. Funny thing is, if we removed Baltimore City, MontCo and PG, it’d be a GOP-leaning state. Hell, I’d cede the latter two to DC just to get ‘em out of Maryland (PG is Anacostia East, anyway).
