LAPUSH, Wash. - A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter with four people on board has gone down near James Island off LaPush.

A member of the Quileute Tribe tells KING 5 that one of the people on board was rescued by two other tribal members. However, there is no official report on the conditions of those on board.

The helicopter was stationed in Sitka, Alaska.

“A Coast Guard helicopter has crashed off the coast of Washington near James Island. More info as it becomes available.”

That was 30 minutes ago.

Have heard that one of our astronauts, when he was old, and had grandchildren and money, began to doubt:

“Never fly in an airplane that has only one engine or one pilot, and never, ever fly in a helicopter.”

Lapush is about an hour and 20 minute drive from my house.

It doesn’t look like weather had anything to do with the event.

Here is what it looks like today. http://www.forkswa.com/webcam2/netcam.jpg

James Island is the rock on the right with the 3 trees on top.

At least they are not far from the beach and their is a CG station in Lapush. The CG crew in Port Angels can fly there within about 20 minutes in this weather. There is also a CG station in Neah Bay, about a 10 minute flight from the SW, so there should be plenty of serious help in positions to quickly respond with short ETA’s.

There is a hospital in Port Angeles, but if any injured have anything more than a paper cut, they will be taken to Seattle.

It’s a bit cooler than where I live, but it’s near 80* here today and expected to be 85 to 90* tomorrow.

Prayers for the crew......

UPDATE

The Quileute Tribe says some tribal members who were preparing to head out to fish on the ocean pulled two of the Coast Guard members from the water.

According to the tribe, one is deceased, but the Coast Guard has not confirmed that. The tribe says the other has a dislocated shoulder and broken leg.

Darryl Penn, the harbormaster at Quileute Marina, tells KING 5 News he saw the chopper go down and went out to assist in the rescue with another man.

In a press release, the Coast Guard says "A good Smaritan retrieved two crew members from the water and transferred them to Emergency Medical Services."

The tribe says a third person is hanging onto a tank in the water. The fourth person has not yet been found.

Well that can be a real nasty place to be floating waiting for help. Good news is that weathers nice today so it should be easy to spot them.

“Never be in an aircraft where the wings are moving faster than the fuselage, and if you are, you had better be in a helicopter. In either case, it’s still probably unsafe.”

-Sign on a Coast Guard hangar wall

Funny thing is, this was posted in the humor section of our bi-weekly company newsletter just last week....

Prayers up for the crew.
