Suspected child abductor kills himself

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- St. Louis County Police confirm for KMOX News that the person of interest in the Alisa Maier child abduction case shot and killed himself as he was approached by police in Lincoln County on Highway D. A police spokesman tells KMOX that they have also located a car matching the description of the suspect's vehicle but police are stopping short of calling him the abductor
The 4-year old Louisiana, Mo. girl was found wandering around a parking lot of a car wash in Old Town Fenton last night, after someone had snatched her from her front lawn some 70 miles away the night before.
After being examined at Children's Hospital, Alisa was released today to her parents. Authorities are not commenting on whether she was sexually assaulted. Police are confirming that her hair was cut during her ordeal.

Jeff Smith shot July 3, died July 4.
Investigators with the Major Case Squad are currently processing a silver Chevrolet Corvette that was stolen from Smith’s garage the night of his death. The vehicle was discovered abandoned off of the roadway a short distance from the crime scene, later that same morning. The investigators have advised that some very significant pieces of evidence have already been recovered from this vehicle.

The 38-year-old man, Paul Serling Smith, shot himself as officers approached his home Wednesday afternoon and died Wednesday night, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum
Sources close to the investigation say a store reported that Smith purchased clothing from the store. That led officials to a property in Lincoln County, Missouri. When police approached the property, Smith apparently shot himself.
Smith was a convicted sex offender who was released from jail two weeks ago after an arrest on drug charges. He pleaded guilty to sodomy in 1995 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The victim in that crime was 10 years old

Wednesday afternoon, as police approached his home, Paul Sterling Smith pulled out a handgun, and shot himself, according to reports from kmov.com St.Louis News. He died later at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in St Charles Missouri.
Paul Sterling Smith was said to have had a 15 year long criminal record, and pleaded guilty on 1995 to sodomizing a 10 year old in Rolla Missouri. According to kmov.com Smith served 15 years in prison for that crime. He was also charged with receiving stolen property last December, but details in that case were unclear.
Smith was just released from jail on June 23 for a traffic violation. It is speculated that he snatched four year old Alisa from her front yard where she was playing with her little brother on Monday. She was found 24 hours later, wondering around at a car wash 80 miles from her home, with her hair cut. The police have not yet named Smith as a suspect, rather calling him a “person of interest”. He was 38 years old.
Paul S. Smith, a registered sex offender, was spray painting his car in his driveway when police arrived around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
Smith brandished a gun and police ordered him to put the weapon down. He refused and shot himself in the head, the newspaper reported.
Smith was taken to a hospital where he died late Wednesday night.
According to the Missouri sex offender registry, Smith was convicted in 1995 of sodomy of a 10 year old, and he spent 11 years behind bars.
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Smith was listed as living with another sex offender. James B. Oellermann, 54, spent five years in prison for molesting a 7-year-old girl.

Local Fox News affiliate KTVI also identified the man as Paul S. Smith, 38, and said he was listed on the Missouri sex offender registry as having sodomized a 10-year-old boy in 1995. He also served prison time on charges of tampering with a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property, the station reported.
Smith’s roommate at the Hawk Point house is reportedly James Oellermann, a fellow sex offender on the state’s registry. The 54-year-old was convicted of first-degree child molestation of a 7-year-old girl, and sentenced in 2004 to five years in prison, the Post-Dispatch reported. He also had a prior conviction for possession of child pornography. Oellermann isn’t believed to be involved in Alisa’s kidnapping, however.
No one should be surprised a sicko is living a few doors down from them. Why these monsters are allowed to hunt in our neighborhoods is beyond reason. The scary thing is, most haven’t be caught, yet.
The silver lining is this creep deleted himself from the sex offender registry and saved the tax payers untold $$$.
I think that would be implied. His cutting her hair makes me wonder if he's not a copycat who thought he could capture and keep a little girl in his basement.
Jaycee Dugard was in the news just recently getting a settlement from the state. Things like that can encourage some nut to try it out.
Must have lost his conviction to the crime. All the pieces of this puzzle aren't together yet, so it's really hard to tell.
