CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia's attorney general says Gov. Joe Manchin can put the late Robert C. Byrd's Senate seat on the ballot this November.

Manchin requested a legal opinion from Attorney General Darrell McGraw, who issued it Thursday.

You mean Valerie Jarrett isn’t going to be the appointed Senator from WVA? Whats up with that?

***Manchin will appoint someone to fill the vacancy in the meantime. The Democrat says he may run for Byrd’s seat, but won’t have himself appointed.***

Democrat appointee will have a *home team* advantage.

Are they still trying to work the slum lord queen into the Senate?

Did you read the article?
Gov can appoint somebody right away, but Gov himself may run in special elections in Nov.

Manchin (D) looks favorite, but McCain won the state easily. GOP should run some pro-life conservative and paint Manchin as part of Nancy Pelosi gang once he gets into DC.

I am NOT sure of that. WV local politics is very strange. WV went strongly for McPain, but also returned communist democRat Jay Rockefeller to the Senate.

Curious to see if the United Mine Workers will throw support behind a DNC and POTUS that is seeking to harm the coal industry.

Not that I’m expecting them to otherwise... just curious.

Rats! I was hoping that West Virginia chose replacement Senators via pistol duel at 15 paces...(at least I think they did the last time they needed one...)

Rockefeller is more just “stupid” then communist.
When I lived in the state I knew some people who were on his staff when he was Governor. They despaired to me (after a few beers loosened tongues!) about how thick he was. His popularity is based primarily on the following statement, "Well he's too rich to steal!". If I had a buck for every time I heard that statement when I lived in WV I'd be as rich as Rockefeller!

Nice pickup opportunity. Bad year to be a dem. We are going in with a 20 point swin (like Brown in Mass.)I think we could have actually picked up the two NY Senate seats if only we could have found two viable candidates.

No cause for celebration. Here are my comments of July 5 on another thread:

I expect that sometime this week, Governor Manchin will announce that he believes that the West Virginia law on special elections is flawed, that he supports an early special election, and that he will ask a special session of the legislature to modify the law to permit a special election this November. He will then announce his candidacy.

He will do this because he now believes that his best chance for election to the Senate is this year. There may be a blacklash if he reneges on his promise not to appoint himself, and its hard to predict what a race in 2012 may look like. In 2012, he might have two opponents: a Republican challenger and the person he appoints to fill the seat.

The best chance for Republicans is probably to wait until 2012 for a special election, Manchin is very popular right now.

All of this is happening because the Democrats have figured out that Manchin can win in November. He is very popular and will feed on the sympathy vote from Byrd's death. By 2012, Byrd's memory will have faded and who knows what kind of shape the Democrats will be in. Their chance is now and they are taking it. Not good news for Republicans.

My brother who lives in WV says the only state GOP’er with enough stature is Shelly Capito.(The state's only GOP congressthing.) Though some people say Manchin could actually run to the right of her. However there plenty of pics and sound bites of Obam & Biden dissing coal, etc as well as Manchin & Obama together. Interesting fodder to use, it would at least interesting to hear Manchin explain his way out of them.
