Sell a guinea pig, go to jail.
That's the law under consideration by San Francisco's Commission of Animal Control and Welfare. If the commission approves the ordinance at its meeting tonight, San Francisco could soon have what is believed to be the country's first ban on the sale of all pets except fish.
That includes dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, lizards and nearly every other critter, or, as the commission calls them, companion animals.
"People buy small animals all the time as an impulse buy, don't know what they're getting into, and the animals end up at the shelter and often are euthanized," said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. "That's what we'd like to stop."
San Francisco residents who want a pet would have to go to another city, adopt one from a shelter or rescue group, or find one through the classifieds.

goodness a gerbil shortage!!!!
more people out of work
If you own a pet store in Oakland - time to raise prices
A city full of brash homosexuals and a high rate of hamsters. Hmm...
“People buy small animals all the time as an impulse buy, don’t know what they’re getting into, and the animals end up at the shelter and often are euthanized,” said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. “That’s what we’d like to stop.”
People get married also on similar impulse. Maybe San Francisco could also ban marriage.
Whoops! That would pose a problem, because then they might have to ban also gay marriage. Oh well, since when has logic interfered with liberal schemes?
The sad part about it is, in this economy the pet owners are struggling to stay afloat anyway, and now this?
So they are not outlawing owning a pet, only that you can not buy it in the city.
I am glad to hear that all the other problems of the city have been resolved since they can not focus on putting yet anothe business, out of business. /s
Enough!
Whoops, indeed.
Behold and wake up people... the socialist-loving Demonrat’s “vision” of America. What a collection of moonbat morons...
Another problem: people can still buy pets outside of San Francisco, so what happens when they bring the pet into town? Will they be stopped at the town line? Will they be forced to liberate the pet? Take it to a shelter? Euthanize it? Elect it to the City Council?
SF.....oh well, maybe the sanctuary city can provide homes for the critters....take in an illegal and get a free puppy
Clearly, the proposed law discriminates against fish. Or maybe discriminates against non-fish. Whatever!
Clearly, the proposed law discriminates against fish. Or maybe discriminates against non-fish. Whatever!
If the problem is dogs and cats, why not address that in some way rather than banning the sale of all pets. This is really overkill.
How cruel.
Fish are people too.
(I guess.... I’m really unsure how to respond to the stupidity.)
There IS a legitimate problem with pet overpopulation. Obviously there is and always has been a need to control that population. This is why we have Dog Catchers.
The problem of course is that you are correct when you say, “If you own a pet store in Oakland - time to raise prices”. This law would be way too easily bypassed and it would simply put people out of work.
Spade and neuter folks (start with the people of San Francisco)!
The latter.
Imagine applying for a job and you have to answer "yes" to a misdemeanor and explain that you crossed the town line to liberate a pet and that you belonged to the pet liberation squad. This is insane!!

“more people out of work”
my sentiments exactly
You can’t make these things up.
Ridiculous ping!
Noooooo! not my pet rock.
It sounds like she is trying to prevent "pet abortions". I wonder where she stands on the "Right to Life" issue?
Isn't tuna a big industry in the San Francisco area? Do you suppose someone at StarKist was a little afraid that someone might label their catch of the day a pet and not allow the sale of tuna?;-)
What’s the problem? The fags can smuggle their rodents into town just the way they like it.
Shhhh, they'll hear you
If this were simply about ending impulse buys, they'd just implement a 3 or 5 day waiting period...lots of responsible breeders have interview processes and some will even insist on meeting prospective buyers at their residence to see if the environs are appropriate for the breed.
Nope....this is just about control and furthering the left's anti-property agenda.
They can have my gecko when they pry it from my cold dead hands....
It's fishist!
You can apply this to firearms, automobile/motorcycle safety, food, business regulation, etc. This is the liberal mindset, use the power of a big all-protecting state to prevent or reduce misery. What they can't or won't see is that their vision is oppressive and prevents and reduces joy too.
Yeah.
It was that damned Icthyo-American lobby, writing campaign checks again.
I knew there was something fishy going on.
Funny, it’ll soon be ok to be an illegal alien in SF, yet you could go to jail over a pet? Maybe people should start taking on illegals as pets? ;-/
Hey those they just flush down the toilet themselves.
I hope it becomes law.
Because there are quite a few idiot veterinarians in the US who have supported the HSUS and PETA, thus giving them with the gullible some credibility.
This should finally wake up those in the veterinary profession who are so stupid as to support HSUS and PETA.
The same goes for some of the pet food and other associated industries.
The ultimate goal is to ban the ownership and/or possession of all animals, including farm animals.
Maybe they are catering to the ever-powerful Guppy Lobby.
“Another problem: people can still buy pets outside of San Francisco, so what happens when they bring the pet into town?”
What color is the pet? What is the pets sexual preference? Is the pet a registered voter? If so, what party?
Shouldn’t they be spending their time on how to get AZ Mexicans to their city?
Pray for America
This ban is as silly as the one on sugar sodee in the vending machines, what, they really don't think people can do this, that SF is a walled city? That people AREN'T already getting their pets in the perfectly conveniently accessible nearby BA cities??
The only thing this story demonstrates is the lack of understanding of a free people, liberty by those running SF ... along with their unbeLEEvable stoopidity.
(1) Ruled by "Napoleon" Newsom and his harem of LGBT "Josephines"...
(2) Starring the impotent Governator and the omnipotent oligarchy aka the state senate....
BEST FOR LAST....
(3) YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!!
“People give money to the homeless all the time as an impulsive act, don’t know what they’re getting into, and the homeless end up at the shelters and often are drunk or drugged,” said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. “That’s what we’d like to see”, so we voted for the city to give them money instead, as we will have more money to take from taxpayers and give the bums than just the few stupid enough to support the drug and drunk habits.
Yes, it is overkill, but that is the way our society has gone now. The solution to everything is all or nothing. We have become totalitarian, which is contradictory to any rational person.
That is why I am soooo glad I had a link because it is more than oxymoronic, it is beyond belief and yes, worth repeating:
YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!!
