Wonder Woman Behind the Curves
Townhall.com ^ | July 9, 2010 | Suzanne Fields

Wonder Woman got a makeover, but she's still behind the curves. Her designers seem not to realize that for decades women have been in the ascendancy in the marketplace, and it's male action heroes who require a makeover, literally and figuratively. Exceptions still rule the imaginations of children, but in the world where most grown-ups live, the male sex seems to need a Wonder Man to idealize possibilities.

Or to put it bluntly, woman is the new man.

For the first time, women make up the majority of the workforce. Women dominate the numbers in undergraduate education and in professional schools. Three women to every two men will earn a B.A. this year. More women than men are studying to become doctors and lawyers. More women than men are managers. Women who were furious when a talking Barbie said, "Math is hard," now have the chance to disprove that. Women now make up 54 percent of the accountants, and they're running about even in jobs of banking and insurance.

Women are accelerating their rise in politics, too, though so far there's no proof that they'll be different from their male counterparts in effectiveness, even though conventional biological wisdom suggests they bring a different way of looking at legislation as well as life. The female speaker of the House hasn't balanced the budget (and shows little interest in doing so), but traditionally "soft," feminine qualities of empathy and cooperation are in demand in the marketplace.

The familiar aggressive male approaches characterized in the sitcom "Mad Men," about cut-throat ad men in the 1950s, are out. Hierarchical structures that governed positions of leadership a half-century ago are rapidly being replaced by horizontal models. The hard edges of the table, with a CEO at the head, have been sanded and rounded for oval-shaped seminars.

"Men dominate just two of the 15 job categories projected to grow the most over the next decade: janitor and computer engineer," writes Hanna Rosin in an essay titled "The End of Men" in Atlantic magazine. "Women have everything else -- nursing home health assistance, child care, food preparation."

Obviously, these are traditional women's domains, but what's at work here is that women are now getting paid for work for which there is an increasing demand in a service economy. The nanny, in fact, can demand a high salary as her specialty becomes professionalized, and more upper-middle class women seek educated women to be the substitute mommy as they leave the home to enter the workforce.

Women haven't made breakthroughs in science like their male counterparts, but it's not politically correct (or socially acceptable) for men to say out loud what they think of distaff abilities in the lab. When Larry Summers as president of Harvard did that, he had to give up the academic life in Cambridge for a political one in Washington. (Not necessarily a bad trade.)

Although chauvinist attitudes remain, male scientists are becoming more supportive of women. "They've come around," cellular biologist Elaine Fuchs tells The New York Times. Scientists, like other male professionals, are witnessing changing times and learning how to take advantage of female wallet power. (Who do you think is buying those expensive designer pocketbooks?)

Increasing numbers of wives earn more than their husbands. Automobile salesman who used to ignore women in the showroom now cater to the ladies, consulting their wishes not only on color and comfort but horsepower and miles per gallon. Automobile ads, however, are still aimed at men. The much-remarked Super Bowl commercial for the Dodge Charger challenged the dominatrix-dominated, macho-challenged, pectoral-deficient males, who in the female view need an aggressive car to rev up their own motors. This car was described in capital letters: MAN'S LAST STAND.

Fashion, always quick to reflect a change in power relations between the sexes, shows costumes for men who suffer from premature emasculation. In last week's Paris shows for spring, male models walked down the runway showing off skinny legs in high waist shorts, with a feminine dickey peeking out from the neckline of their sweaters. Especially eye-catching were shorts that looked like skirts with a flap of material inserted between the legs.

Nobody expects a man to wear such things, but lurking beneath frivolous skirmishes in the war between the sexes are the children who suffer because they are raised without fathers and have no masculine model. Increasing numbers of unmarried women prefer sperm from the deep freeze rather than the warm-blooded male in the bed. With men in such apparent retreat, you wonder why women still plot, scheme and sometimes play dirty just to get one. Even Wonder Woman hasn't fixed that.

At this point, we need to remind ourselves what the Founding Fathers would have said:

Lynda Carter ... the first woman that made me realize early on that there’s something cool about attractive women :-).

My adolescent years were great. Between Lynda and Olivia...sigh

But stats for graduating class of 2000 - 10 years after graduating the number of real grunting clinicians (those practicing) the proportion is like 80:20 male : female.

Because the men still have to go to work every day, while the girls have ..... "alternatives"?

But even modern comics serve as a platform for political commentary....their heroes are becoming more liberal.

This is a liberal cabal at work -- they brag about it to each other, how they're introducing homosexual and other deviant heroes to their work and pitching politically loaded story lines at the kids.

It's organized. Gramsci's tools at work.

This is insane ... we were fighting about Xanadu the other day and how zombies may have saved that film. :-).

I also saw a few ONJ performances on You Tube. Not only was she was friggin’ gorgeous, she could *sing*. The last pop singer I ever heard with talent (and I want to stress pop ... as in top 40) was Mariah Carey before she fell into the ghetto. That would have been, what, the early 90s? I am sure there have been some decent singers since then, but nothing like those two.

Olivia IS STILL TOTALLY HOT.

I've recently, in the last month, also discovered her videos on YouTube. My favorite is from a couple of years ago, where she at the Hans Christian Anderson performing Xanadu...Be still my heart. That smile still gets me.

Unfortunately pictures of her in these later years fail to capture the radiant smile she once had. Even for as great as this pic, she's looking tired and worn from life, compared to her 30's.

Olivia-Xanadu live

Strange ... I kinda got back into her music recently as well. An ex of mine from a LONG time ago (well, if you consider 1988 a long time ago) used to play “I Honestly Love You” again and again (on vinyl mind you) and I instantly had to hate ONJ publicly (being a headbagner, well, we had rules ;-) ). While I hate “Grease”, it is still ok to catch her parts :-). I had to admit that I loved her voice even back then, but that would have been grounds for execution. All voices had to be compared to Lemmy from Motorhead :-) ... if the voice resemble him, well, they were worthless ;-).

Now, flashforward to late 2009 ... I hear Xanadu on some station playing “the oldies” and I could not get the damn song out of my head. I go and pick up some of her music. Damn. Amazing talent (same goes for ELO with respect to catchy pop tunes, but that’s a whole other discussion). What’s really goddamn strange is that about 2 months later, that same ex girlfriend found me on Facebook ... she’s convinced I had some kind of lobotomy or something to do such a 180 when it comes to music :-). Still, it was great to hear from her ... brings back awesome memories.

I had heard that ONJ battled breast cancer ... that would kill some of that smile. I think she also lost a husband that was found somewhere in the past 10 years (I forget those details). She is still amazing looking. I’ll have to dig up some of her more recent performances.

I also never realized most of her fame came in her late 20s / early 30s (worldwide I guess ... or just in the USA?). I don’t think that happens anymore. It seems that the only pop “vocalists” that make it anymore are handpicked by Disney at the age of 11 or rip off Marilyn Manson despite having some mythical “Classical music training” (I seriously despise losers like “Lady GaGa” and all of this other garbage released to the mainstream anymore).

Obligatory conservative commentary .... you know ONJ had to be at least leaning towards the right. Look at her. She still looks like the eternal optimist.

Lynda Carter seemed to have lost it when her looks went. No botox or facelift is going to help that seawitch. Hatred makes one age rather quickly. I’ve seen her in a few interviews and she turns instant angry when discussing politics (she HATED Sarah Palin ... not disliked .... HATED ... if you ever want to see PDS in action, well, if in the 1,000,000:1 chance you bump into Ms. Carter, just say the name “Palin” ... she goes berzerk).

At least we have her “normal” years on Wonder Woman reruns ;-). Her only talent was filling out that costume :-). Not a bad one, but that kind of stuff doesn’t last forever :-).

I had a paper route when I was a kid. The FIRST album I ever bought was ONJ Have You Never Been Mellow.

When I was 19 I had a '76 Camaro, BFG-RTA 70's all around, chevy 350 slightly modified, headered dual glass pack exhaust. Guys wanted it, the girls wanted to go for a ride in it.

Often times I had ONJ or Anne Murray playing. Most of the time though it was Journey or Def Leppard or AC/DC.

Don't know how often people would look through my tape case and look at me like I had a horn growing from my forhead. Olivia-AC/DC-Anne Murray-Judas Priest-Barbara Mandrell-Def Leppard-Ricky Scaggs-Journey

Most people saw the out going, somewhat wound up, brash, big guy. They didn't see the quiet side often. Todays a little different. Not so much rock. Mostly country followed by smooth jazz.

Olivia is still gorgeous. Yeah she had breast cancer. Went through a divorce. A long time boyfriend/ fiance' suddenly went missing and presumed dead-recently reports of him being spotted. Bankrupt business venture.

Yeah she's had some hard stuff.

As far as right leaning-I'm not sure- she's done a number of "pride" events.
