FN 5.56 SCAR Retained in USSOCOM’s Inventory
Defense Talk ^ | 7/9/2010 | Defense Talk

Posted on 07/09/2010 4:33:25 PM PDT by ErnstStavroBlofeld

Belgium-based firearms manufacturer FN Herstal hereby refutes the allegations recently found on the web that USSOCOM abandoned the 5.56 version of the SCAR rifle and reconfirms USSOCOM's decision to acquire the full FN SCAR family of weapons, including the 5.56mm rifle.

The FN SCAR family of weapons consists of the 5.56mm SCAR rifle, 7.62mm SCAR rifle and 40mm LV Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (respectively designated as MK 16, MK 17 and MK 13 by USSOCOM). These three components were developed by FN Herstal in close cooperation with USSOCOM and have each met all the operational and fielding tests required by the program.

This resulted in the notification by USSOCOM last May that the full SCAR system entered into Milestone C phase, allowing production and deployment of the full range of SCAR weapons. The 5.56 version will be part of USSOCOM's inventory.

The choice between the 5.56 and the 7.62 caliber will be left to the discretion of each constitutive component of USSOCOM's Joint Command (e.g. Seals, Rangers, Army Special Forces, USMC, AFSOC) depending on their specific missions on today's battlefield.

I prefer AUG HBAR in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. SCAR-H has too small a clip and too slow a rate of fire. Nice recoil suppression though.

FN Herstal probably would not exist today if not for John Browning. The factory was originally built to fulfill a contract for Mauser Rifles in the late 1800s.

After the contract was filled, the factory had nothing to do. They tried building other products to keep the doors open but the company was saved by John Browning’s .32 auto which they built literally in the hundreds of thousands. FN and Browning began an association which eventually resulted in what I guess is the largest arms manufacturing facility in the world.

Sorry Guy[s], but I want to go to an AR-10. I love the punch of a 7.62 mm, for a rifle & a good old fashioned .45 Colt for a side arm. I do go on the “spray & pray” idea of a gun fight.

That’s a S.C.A.R. by fabrique nationale of belgium.

You can’t afford it.

i tried to order one a year or two ago. my gun shop proprietor laughed at me and then told me the going price and the wait. He had the same response when I tried to order a rohrbaugh and then again when I tried to order a boberg.

One thing I recall from Browning’s biography was that he was very impressed by the FN workers and their ability to create finely finished weapons.

Browning was obviously the greatest gun designer ever but his inventions were fairly rough in their original form. They worked perfectly but would show rough finish, heat coloring etc. He was fascinated by watching the workers turn out such well made guns and appreciated their skill.

Of course Colt and Smith & Wesson were capable of doing the same thing.

I think I’d go with a keltec su-16 before the 556 remington pump gun tho. Actually, I’d like to have both. And a ruger ranch to boot.

You can afford it. You just can’t have it, because that is the select fire version. BATFE won’t register any more auto rifles, and its been that way since 1986. The left snookered Reagan. It didn’t happen often (another one was amnesty), but when they did, it harmed America.

25 years ago, when I was training Infantry, in the attack the preferred approach was to shoot at known, or suspect enemy locations. Using that approach meant you didn’t give the enemy the first shot. After he shoots, you can shoot back at muzzle flashes with (M-60) machinegun fire, and things were expected to be clearer, if less pleasant. We also had platoon snipers, armed with M-1D rifles in .30/06 (7.62mmX63), and we expected to used them against LP/OPs before the fight, or enemy leadership.
If your round is close, some enemy soldiers will put their heads down, and hesitate before they can screw up their courage to shoot again. If you are lucky, and you tag him, he may be out of the fight, or may be wounded, reducing his effectiveness.

In a situation where there are noncombatants around, this approach may not lead to the best results, and may not be permitted by your rules of engagement. We figured that after the first few rounds, the noncombatants should hide, or move away. We didn’t have the “jihadi” on our radar, though we knew that Russians after drinking would occasionally try a bums rush.

As a civilian, each round comes with its own lawyer, and using a larger caliber “man stopping” round would be preferred, so you employ as few lawyers as possible.

Ever heard of an “obregon”?

I’ve dreamed about going back in time and taking an obregon style safety, adding a glock style locking lug, and a hi-power style barel link, and a beretta(modified to accomodate a glock locking lug) style open top slide, eliminating the barrel bushing and incorporating a flared bull barrel...combining it all into one exploded view sketch and presenting it to john moses browning on his trip to europe to meet with the belgians.

I suppose you are talking about the Mexican .45 auto. Obregon also designed a machine gun.

Believe it or not, I once owned an Obregon made in Mexico. It was a cheap .22 single shot pistol. It was made of plastic and sheet metal but the barrel was of high quality and it was surprisingly accurate.

It was probably the cheapest way to possibly make a working and actually pretty decent pistol. It had a rolling block actiom, all the parts of the rolling block were stampings.

I bought it when I was 18 and had very little money. I would far rather have it than one of the RG, PIC, etc. guns which were fairly common back then.

Ever heard about that guy that shot a badguy with a 10mm in self defense? The lawyers claimed he was a gun kook since 10mm is way beyond “normal” power levels and thus constituted excessive force. The shooter went to jail for excessive force...or something like that. But he went to jail because he used a gun that was “too powerful”.

I have a G29 in OD green with accessory rail. I’m told I have the only one in a 5 state area(or more). Well, I did at the time of purchase...hold while I check receipt...uh-oh. unreadable. receipt printing has faded away to nothing. I’d guess 4 to 6 years ago.

I actually got it before they were officially available(via stealthy devious means) I bought a standard black one, then returned it for a cracked frame. Then had my gunshop proprietor make a deal with the warrantee guy at the factory to slip an OD green frame in for the warrantee exchange.

my gunshop guy went for it. he got the factory guy to go for it. I had the OD green gun with accessory rail before they were officially available.

I Don’t remember how they worked out the serial number discrepancy.

er yeah..

I've got thousands (all pre loaded) in living color all surplus, nice in metal key cans from Greece and Denmark.

though I would be just as happy with an M1A/M14 or a FN FAL in 7.62X51 NATO...You know, rounds that will pass through a car door or a wall to take out bad guys in cities or across huge distances in deserts and not just for point blank jungle fighting against midgets.

Sorry Guy[s], but I want to go to an AR-10. I love the punch of a 7.62 mm, for a rifle & a good old fashioned .45 Colt for a side arm. I have an AR-10 and an FN-FAL. The old FAL is much more resistant to sand and works better in the desert. The SCAR comes in .308, so the choice between the AR-10 and SCAR isn't about caliber.

There are a lot higher end AR-10s than mine. I will say it is a tack driver, nearly as accurate out to 300 yards as my two favorite bolt guns. Also, it has a flat top, so you can scope it. The FN-FAL has no provision for a scope.

The thing is FN makes a bunch of our US military weapons: the squad auto, the bigger machine gun, crew fired weapons. I think they have more ability to create a 21st century fighting rifle that is superiour than the more-or-less civilian oriented companies like DPMS, Bushmaster and Armalite.

The Knights Armament AR-10 is probably the best, and has been developed for the Navy.

DSA does make an Extreme Duty Scope Mount that allows you to readily mount optics. At $80, it's overpriced, but works very well.

As for Knight's AR-10 being the best, I take it you are referring to their Stoner SR-25, which is indeed 'best of breed'. LMT now makes a .308 version of their monolithic rail platform that I hear is also an excellent choice.

I haven’t handled one, but it doesn’t seem to be very modular - i.e. easily converted to a pistol or SBR. It also looks ergonomically “clunky.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to own one, but I’m not sure I’d want that thing as my go-to rifle.

I’m wondering what the guys who are using them regularly are saying about them.

Yep...good thing that most rednecks with .30-30s are less likely to pop off rounds at LEOs than are gang banging crackheads with AKs. Same goes for rednecks with AKs, ARs, FALs, M-1s, Springfields, Mosin-Nagants, etc.
