The man shot by police outside a Summerlin Costco store on Saturday was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a master's degree from Duke University, friends said.
Army veteran Erik Scott, 39, was at the store near Charleston Boulevard and the Las Vegas Beltway with his girlfriend before three officers fatally shot him in a confrontation.

Anything labeled “zero tolerance” is just a vendetta. For example: In some towns, police will go into bars and check people for ID, even those that look 70. If a single person does not have identification on them they close the bar. It is a common practice in small towns or neighborhoods where the “powers that be” want a particular place shut down. It is very reminiscent of how Nazi Germany dealt with small business - even non-Jewish.
“Zero tolerance” is used to punish the peasants. That is its function.

When I took the CCW class, both instructors said they had been stopped while carrying, and both had been told at times to slowly draw their weapon and hand it to the cop. So it seems there is NOT a standard procedure. We were told to obey what the cop said since, in the instructors’ experiences, they said different things at different times.
This sounds like he was told different things at the SAME time - so what do you do then?

Costco is also one of the largest private supporters of Planned Parenthood and is recommended by Planned Parenthood as the locale of choice to buy abortion drugs, as they have a cut-rate-deal with Planned Parenthood.
In places like Las Vegas, it isn’t possible to conceal carry and NEVER let anyone catch a glimpse. Even if you put it in a fanny pack of some sort, someone at the right angle at the right time can catch momentary sight of it. And if it is IWB or on a belt, then someone WILL be able to guess at times that the bulge is a gun.
Don’t know about Nevada, but in Arizona there is no requirement that a concealed weapon not print.

Public locations in Nevada have the option to not allow concealed carry. If they ask you to leave and you don't you face a trespassing charge. I also clearly remember the Costcos in Reno being posted no concealed carry. You can blow off the sign, but if they ask you to leave you have to comply.
I'm in federal law enforcement and my agency has had people in uniform drawn on by local police because they don't recognize the uniform. I really have better things to do than get shot by deputy Fife.
You will see a lot of "frequent fliers" with the police that don't even listen to the commands they are given, they just prone themselves out.
Let the government disarm you for your own safety. Tell them they will need to disarm and keep hands clearly visible.

I know cops deal with a seedy side of humanity. But I am tired of hearing how dangerous their job is. Being a police officer doesn’t even make the top 15 most dangerous jobs in America.
Fishers and related fishing workers is number one btw with 111.8 fatalities per 100K workers.
I still remember the case out here in LA a few years back where the LAPD (a female officer and male partner) gunned down some old homeless lady because she "came after them with a screwdriver."

But the 72-year-old man, in addition to another witness reached Monday, said they did see the weapon and did see Scott reach for it.
Police have said that Scott drew a pistol and pointed it at officers after they ordered him to raise his hands and lie on the ground. Both witnesses gave their accounts to homicide investigators, they said.
The 72-year-old man heard police say, “Get on the ground. Get on the ground.” He saw Scott facing the officers, who were between Scott and the store entrance.
The man said he saw Scott reach with his right hand and pull out what appeared to be a gun in a zippered holster. He recognized the holster, he said, because he has one like it. Officers then fired, and the man saw the gun fall out of Scott’s hand. The witness did not see Scott point the gun at officers.
“I feel sorry for the guy, but he just made a dumb move,” the 72-year-old man said.
The second witness, who also spoke on the condition that his name not be used, was standing near the entrance when he said he heard police shout, “Get down on the ground. Get down now.”
He turned to see why police were yelling, he said, and saw Scott reaching for what appeared to be a pistol in his waistband. The witness said he recognized the butt of the gun and immediately turned toward his wife and covered her as they dove to the ground.
“He was definitely reaching for the gun,” the man said.
The witness turned away before he could see whether Scott fully removed the weapon from his waistband and didn’t see the shooting. He said it did not appear that Scott was trying to “quick-draw” the weapon on the officers.
He heard gunshots soon after. The witness said he has been struggling with how the incident unfolded.
“It’s so totally bizarre to me” that the man would grab the weapon in front of the officers, the witness said.
He added that he doesn’t believe the man deserved to die for his actions, as he has heard other people say. But he said he does believe the officers were justified in their response.
Bingo. He was ordered to drop his weapon, which he didn't have in his hand, so as he tried to get it, they shot him. There was NOTHING to suggest he was using his gun, and at the very least they should have shot non-lethal pellets at him at that time.
It breaks my heart for his family, and for his life cut so tragically and needlessly short.
A 5 yr. cop and 2 with 2 yrs. combined experience 9 yrs. Military vet had more weapons experience than all three cops combined.
Cops need to be charged with murder and the employee needs to to charged with accessory.
Fortunately I live in a state that allows open carry, and easily obtainable CCP.
So if a weapon shows, no biggie. When DH’s CCP ran out, he just open carried a few times.
That’s the way it should be (except there shoudn’t have to be permits to carry concealed).
Any time we consider moving we realize the state we might have though of has less 2nd Amendment freedom and we say “forget it”.
