WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Aides to U.S. President Barack Obama will aim on Wednesday to lift sagging confidence in their economic leadership by arguing that their policies are creating millions of jobs and spurring private investment.
A report to be released at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) will estimate that Obama's $862 billion economic stimulus package, which passed last year, has saved or created 3 million jobs and is on track to meet its goal of 3.5 million jobs by the end of this year.

The report comes a day after a pair of polls raised red flags for Obama and his Democrats, who appear vulnerable four months before November congressional elections. Republicans are seeking to overturn Democratic dominance in both houses of the U.S. Congress.

It probably did save millions of jobs. Why in our state alone, there are at least 25 road projects in every two mile radius. By the end of this year, I think every inch (literally) of road in Wisconsin will have been repaved, every bridge rebuilt and every curb recemented. Never mind the fact that these aren’t jobs that will last past next year, there are dozens of high donating road builders who will have to donate to Obama in 2012.
The U.S. has lost 2.2 million jobs since President Barack Obama took office. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the total number of jobs nationwide fell from 134.3 million at the end of January to 132.2 million at the end of May.
The unemployment rate now stands at 9.4 percent, up from 7.6 percent at the end of January. “I think my initial measure of success is creating or saving 4 million jobs,” said President Obama on February 9.
Monthly job losses reported by the BLS are as follows:
Feb: 651,000
Mar: 663,000
Apr: 539,000
May: 345,000
Total: 2,198,000
“President Obama demanded that Congress spend hundreds of billions of dollars to stimulate the economy,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "On Friday, February 13 Congress approved a disgraceful trillion-dollar spending and debt package under the guise of economic stimulus. Since that date at least 1.5 million jobs have been lost in America.”
“Spend more money. Have fewer jobs,” continued Norquist. “Let's stop this madness.”
