A new poll shows Arizona Sen. John McCain widening his lead over his Republican challenger ahead of next month's GOP primary.

The Rocky Mountain Poll released Wednesday shows McCain leading former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth 64 percent to 19 percent. Political newcomer Jim Deakin had 5 percent.

McCain's margin has widened from a 54 percent to 28 percent lead he held over Hayworth in the same poll in April.

The telephone poll was conducted by the Behavior Research Center between June 30 and July 11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points. Pollsters surveyed a random sample of 334 registered Arizona voters, including 190 Republicans and 144 independents who said they would vote in the Republican primary.

C’mon, Arizona. We Utahans got rid of Bennett (Hatch is next). The LEAST you can do is get rid of squishy Juan.

You’re right. After all, the country knows Sarah Palin’s endorsements only turn off conservative voters.

Sarah’s a joke, right norge?

Exactly. Sarah Palin hasn’t been able to help a single person with her endorsements at any time.

Polls can and do come up with all sorts of "statistics," and this one just might be close, though with that much margin, and knowing just how upset AZs are with the state of illegals sapping all the energy out of their state, this seems out of balance.

I'm wondering the percentage of GOPers; dims; indys, the parts of the state quizzed but mostly, whether or not the pollster chose "likely primary voters," i.e. a tab of those who've voted in the past 2 or 3 primaries, not merely registered voters or worse yet, someone who answered the phone.

There's just too much anger over lack of political will to shut borders, punishing employers who recruit and hire illegals, not to mention all those kidnappings (though Sheriff Joe Arpaio said last night, it was mostly happening in the illegal communities), for McLame to be so far out front. Something seems amiss in this poll finding.

Right! She’s not ready but they are certain of her powers over AZ voters. Over the top powerful but not ready! LOL!

Hatch is to UT as McPain is to AZ, but the two have an intense dislike for each other, I understand.

Palin has more clout with Republican voters than any other national figure.

Some posters claim she'll only bring in 20% compared to another R candidate. Now she's powerful and other times no one wants her or she isn't ready, etc.

Fun to watch.

This bogus poll is meant to discourage Hayworth supporters. I don’t buy it. People hate McCain out here. Not one vote has been cast yet. Get to work and send money!

The Federal Government has too much power giving incumbent Federal Congressmen too much money from the sale of their power.

Its dam near unthinkable that we the people would be able to weld the federal tools as to reduce federal power or otherwise do something that hurts their real contributers.

We not only have the natural inclination of federal politicians working against us, we also have a nearly insurmountable incumbent advantage.

As I have said many times before. If we are going to solve this problem its going to have to come from our state and local governments forcefully removing power from the ground up. Hiting this directly will only continue to prove as futile as it always has proved.

My proposal is not an easy path to walk as we will have to deal with the full might of the Federal Power apparatus which we can no longer weld struggling to hold on to the valuable power they have accumulated. That includes their courts. At the end of the day we are going to have to play State and local interest against them. Uses them as our ally to help us push down the Federal monster from the outside so that it may become more manageable from the inside.

We do this and you will find that congress will become more amendable to our goals, as the reality of the fact that they are not practically able to defend that power sets in. Our Federal leaders will look else where for political support and that elsewhere will be the interest of the voters.

In other-words they will more realistically cave for political points as they are no loner able to win the battle for valuable political power.

OK - I'll take the word from a freeper living in AZ than from any propaganda poll!

THANKS!

I’m leaning in your direction, but I’m still holding out hope.

I am a realist though.

Who do you think has more clout with Republican voters? Whose endorsement would Republican Candidates want more than Palin's?

Your questions are irrelevant. McCain is not a newcomer or a Tea Party candidate who is an underdog. Therefore, the voters in AZ aren't going to be influenced by her supporting McCain because they expected it all along.

Sarah supporters knew far in advance that she was going to endorse and campaign for McCain. We didn't like it, and there was healthy debate about it. I posted a vanity complaining about it too.

But in the end, she's not going to change her mind about it so who is making it an issue? It's those who need a strawman to keep on hand in case of a McCain victory. It's those who were never supporters of Sarah to begin with. You can argue about whether or not her endorsement of McCain was good or bad but in the end, she has no control over your vote. It is up to the people of AZ to boot McCain out of office, not her.

Sarah Palin isn’t responsible for reelecting McCain no matter how many times shebacks him.

Like I said, Palin detractors are desperately cooking up a strawman in the event of a McCain victory. They don't support her anyway, had she remained on the sidelines and said nothing, they still wouldn't have supported her because she actually ran with him. They are hyping the issue to knock her out of contention in 2012, that's all.

When other candidates (mostly front runners) she supported won their nomination, many folks on FR claimed it was due to her.

Candidates such as Haley and Carly weren't "front runners." They were stuck in neutral until Palin's endorsement.

If McCain wins, let’s see how many people here recognize her endorsement for his success the way they did in the other races.

Sorry bub, it's not the same. She ran with McCain and the conventional wisdom told you it was going to be a no-brainer for her to endorse him. Everybody knew this was going to happen, except for disgruntled types who are only making it an issue out of their dislike for Palin.

I think it was a mistake for her to endorse McCain.

I do too, but in the end what can you do about it. You can continue to gripe about it or simply go out and double your efforts to support the other guy. Why are you letting an endorsement get to you? Conservatives are supposed to be independent thinkers, right?
