Glenn Beck Tells Audience He Might Be Going Blind
Politics Dialy ^

Posted on 07/19/2010 6:59:45 AM PDT by Scythian

During a tearful and passionate speech at his "American Revival" meeting in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Fox News host Glenn Beck revealed that he may be going blind.

During his speech (video below), Beck told the audience, "I can't focus my eyes."

Taking a shot at health care reform, Beck said, "I went to the best doctor I could find, while I could still go to the best doctor I can find."

Beck, 46, says he has been diagnosed with macular dystrophy, and joked that the doctor told him, "You could go blind in the next year . . . or you might not."

Rush has found a way around his disability and so can Glenn.

“No...this does not affect the retina, but rather is a disease of the cornea.”

#####

Actually the terminology is sometimes used in describing a retinal condition as well. The dual nomenclature is less than optimal.

Glenn would be much better off with the corneal type, which at worst would require a penetrating keratoplasty (transplant).

The retinal form is largely untreatable except via Low Vision therapeutics, PRN.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it only meant the disease as pertaining to the cornea. I’m a pediatrician and was only trying to help out the non-medical freeper. Now I know that there’s an ophthalmologist around, I’ll know whom to call!

Too bad. I hoped he was going mute.

Ya broke Reagan's 11th commandment.

I was refering to R. Lee Ermey the drill sargeant...I wasn't refering to his politics which I assume is right of center.

Actually, it PROBABLY (hopefully) is the anterior segment (corneal) form. The terminology is not used that often, but would be slightly more likely to indicate the corneal pathology, which curiously has no relation to the retinal type.

BTW and FWIW, I’m an optometrist (OD).

I have worn “no line” bifocals for over 15 years. They took a bit to get used to, especially going up and down stairs, but they work just fine. I hate having to look around for the right glasses for a given task.

For me, it’s the thought of hearing aids that drives me up the wall. I’m a 61 year young male and I remain vain....LOL... I also don’t want just one more thing to screw around with when I get up in the morning, so I hold off and miss things I could once hear.

The “no lines” will cost a bit more, but they are well worth it.

Recently, I have experienced occasions with focus problems and I am going to make an appointment with my eye doc. My concern is that my focus issue could be a result of my diabetes.... I was told that might be coming. I don’t think I could handle being blind, with all the other issues I have, so it’s got me a bit nervous.

Anyway, once you get used to the bifocals, you may find that you love them... I sure did.

Good luck....

Ya broke Reagan's 11th commandment.

Silly me. I thought that only applied to Republicans running against each other in primaries. But since I did, I'll go ahead and throw Hannity and O'Reilly into the category of guys I wish would STFU.

But neither of them even approach Beck's level of douchebaggery. I really can't stand that guy. And he thinks you're all stupid.

And I'm pretty sure he is himself an idiot.

I don't watch or listen to regularly. But I've heard enough from the guy to know that anybody that feels compelled to call him an idiot, while throwing in "Morman douchebag", is a fool; and I'm pretty sure a bigoted ass as well.

I just Scroogled “macular dystrophy. This is no disease of old age. According to the websites I checked, its onset is during childhood. Parents notice that the child is having visual problems. It’s hard for me to believe that Beck hasn’t known about this for a long time, if he actually has the disease (which comes in several varieties). From an article: “Corneal changes become visible in the first decade of life; vision may be significantly reduced by age 20-40 years.”

Gurn engages in profanity, meanness, and anti-Catholic, anti-Mormon vileness.

When I saw his responses on this thread about a guy, a dad, maybe losing eyesight in his mid-40s, I had to research some of his other postings. He uses the word douchebag 3 times in referring to Beck. What incisive analysis.

Gurn uses the internet to vent his spleen. I know now to avoid him. Free Republic is chock full of wisdom, humor, pathos, intelligence, and spirited, brilliant debate. I'm sorry that Gurn bypasses these.

Geez. Lighten up. I said I didn't want him to go blind, just mute.

Serious question: should anyone be considered a leader of the conservative movement if he had no clue who Whittaker Chambers was?

He is a douchebag. And he is Mormon. So I don't see the problem there.

Serious answer: Of course; and what a silly question. Chamber's, Hiss, and Soviet espionage are hardly at the heart of historic or present day conservatism. Could somebody seriously claim to be a baseball expert who forgot about Bob Uecker one day?

Some nobody on the internet obsessing over some moment he must have witnessed, where the existence of a turned commie symp that died before he was born slipped somebody's mind, means nothing about the intelligence or standing of the object of said nobody's obsession. If we sat you and the idiot Beck down and did a quiz show on figures in the history of leftists and progressives, and communists, who should we put our money on?

I know that I am supposed to know, but I don’t. Shame on me.

It’s been about 4 to 5 months and I am to go in for a late blood test in two weeks. I think we got it down to 5.6 the last time it was checked.

I was checked by my eye doc about 6 months ago and was fine then. His office recently called me and told me to come in for another checkup because of the potential issues that can come from diabetes.

My daily strip test is generally between 110 to 130 with occasional jumps to 230, when I screwup my diet, which is not very often. ;>)

This loss of focus comes and goes and has only started to be noticed within the past couple of weeks.... just enough to make me a bit nervous.
