The Feds' $95-million Breastfeeding Boondoggle
American Thinker ^ | July 19 2010 | Peter Wilson

The USDA's Food and Nutrition Service has set up a network of "lactation consultants" and "breastfeeding peer counselors," which is a strange use of the word "peer," since the counselors are paid $50,000-$60,000 a year, plus benefits, to be your peer. A job notice for a lactation consultant in Washington State notes:

This position is covered by an "Agency Shop" provision. Therefore as a condition of employment, the incumbent of this position must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are placed into pay status.

The Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010 (Public Law 111-80), provided $80 million for WIC State agencies to build upon and expand breastfeeding peer counseling efforts.

Next thing you know, they will be requiring the women who do breast-feed to be tested for the quality of their milk, so that the assigned consultant can fill one of the many mandates issued by BO’s wife.

You are close.

If the Mother chooses to breastfeed then they get extra coupons for food that is supposed to help the mother produce better milk.

I would like to know how much money goes into WIC for mothers who could breastfeed but “choose” to formula feed. To me formula is a luxury that should not be paid for. I also think that food stamps should cover basics like flour rice and some vegetables. In other words poor people need to learn to cook.

So the welfare breeders really are too stupid to even know how to stick a nipple into a mouth?

Too bad they aren’t equally clueless about, “you want me to let you put which into where, and do what?!?” At least then they wouldn’t have to worry about learning how to breast feed.

When I was a kid we were dirt poor. I remember standing in line to get surplus foods like oatmeal, butter, peanut butter and dried milk like a lot of the other poor people in town. We were not on welfare.

A friend of mine was poor also, but her family was on welfare. Her mother bought Pepperidge Farm cookies and got to eat those cookies with pure, whole milk, not the stuff my mother had to make which could not be beat long enough to remove all the lumps.

Classifying formula for innocent babies as a "luxury" is a bit harsh. I didn't produce enough milk to sustain my firstborn son, and was relieved when we found a formula that he could keep down.

I understand your frustration, though, Pennyfarmer. Too many people are shifting the responsibility of their children's bills onto the backs of others. My kids understand that everytime the government promises something "for free", Mommy and Daddy are the ones paying for it.

Dear Applegate:

Not all children instinctively latch on properly; which can cause malnutrition in the child and infections in the mother. A girlfriend of mine was a strong advocate for breastfeeding, but a nasty infection in her breast made breastfeeding so painful for her, it almost turned her completely against it when the next child came along.

Since the majority of mothers moved away from breastfeeding a few decades ago, the wisdom of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers has to be taught and passed on again.

Thankfully, I'm sharing some other, more important wisdom from my grandmother's time with my children - like keeping yourself pure until your wedding night!

Many food stamps are sold on the street for cash at half face value to buy booze and drugs.

Meanwhile, their children are starving for food.

Some people cannot be helped. They are sick psychopaths who think of themselves and immediate gratification.

Lol, eloquent way to put it but I wonder the same thing. WHY does a woman need another woman to explain to her how to put an infant up to her breast? Would it not come naturally? If not, wouldn’t a pamphlet suffice? What did all the women do in the old days before they even had formula?

Okay yeah I know there are some special cases where extra help is needed to help cope with infection or poor milk production or baby not latching on...I just think they get too nosy and go too far with the whole thing. Why “lactation consultants” when all ob/gyn nurses should be educated to help with this.

That is why I specified those who “Choose” to breast feed. I understand there are Mothers who can not breastfeed. My first child my wife had a really hard time, then the next kids were twins and that is near impossible. But the last 4 have all been breast fed.

The food stamp game is played a bit differently now. Instead of Food stamps being a literal term they are given a EBT card that runs similar to a debit card. But I am certain there are scams that are run under the new system.

Yep, just buy the food and then sell the food for cash.

As you said, unfortunately, there is always a way.

Government funded union jobs designed to force taxpayers to fund the DNC. How long will Americans tolerate these parasites?

doesn’t La Leche League do this kind of thing for free with volunteers, or at least with employees paid for by the organization rather than taxpayers?

When I had my kids, the nurses on the maternity floor were all very helpful and were definitely advocates of breastfeeding. One would think this would be a common thing, but you know what happens when you start thinking...

I understand your frustration with the welfare system and its patrons, but you are seriously uneducated about breastfeeding. Should there not be childbirth prep classes, either? Sure, your body will probably be just fine giving birth if you never had a lesson, but wouldn’t you like to know how it all works, the best way to do it, and what to do if there are problems? We don’t live like we used to...the knowledge is not being passed on like it used to be. These lactation consultants possess this knowledge. Breastfed babies get sick less and develop healthier, which leads to less medical care...which should make you happy, since the moms these women are helping are probably on Medicaid. There is so much more than “sticking a nipple into a mouth”.
