W.Va. special election for Byrd's Senate seat set

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A last-minute legislative compromise has cleared the way for a November election to fill the late Robert C. Byrd's U.S. Senate seat.
The measure, which sets an Aug. 28 primary and Nov. 2 general election, was passed 83-7 by the House and 29-0 by the Senate.
The compromise allows Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito to run both for Byrd's seat and a sixth U.S. House term. She's considered the GOP's top prospect for winning the seat.
Gov. Joe Manchin has said it's highly likely that he'll also run. The Democrat appointed Carte Goodwin to succeed Byrd temporarily on Friday.
The bill had to pass during Monday's special session to apply this fall. It also limits the discretion allowed Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, whose office oversees the special election.
What are her chances?
Byrd brought home over 3 billion dollars in pork over his career. And he kept getting re-elected. Do WV voters want to keep picking their fellow citizens’ pockets?
Why would anyone want to fill Sheets’ seat? There’s nothing left in West Virginia to name after themselves. Why bother?

I spent a lot of time working all over WV and my wife hails from there. My experience is that there are indeed a high number of people in WV that would like nothing more than to keep picking the pockets of the fellow citizens. It's become a generational thing, thanks to Sheets. West Virginia is a welfare basket case second to none. The sad part is before Sheets, these people were very proud and self sufficient folks because they had to be in order to live there.

In a word, yes. We have the same problem next-door here in Western PA (witness John Murtha). The thinking goes something like this....
Okay, so, like, we need them unions to pay good workin’ man’s wages and benefits n’at, but all of them cheap greedy corporations go running off to Right to Work states n’at, so we have to rely on a good workin’ man’s Democrat to take that money and bring it back to the good ol’ union workin’ people in Pennsylvania n’at, so if yinz can get yer Congressman into the right committee to steer lotsa government money and contracts n’at to your town n’at, it will mean, like, good jobs for everybody n’at. And, like, we can only have a level playing field if we elect our sonofabitch to take that money back from where it ran away to and funnel it back to us n’at.

The Democrat, Manchin, claims to be pro-life.
The Republican, Capito, doesn’t.
I can’t see anyone beating little Joe.
We are still proud self sufficient folks, and we even have teeth and know a little correct grammar. Maybe no one has noticed that we are not one of the states that are close to bankruptcy.
The answer to the question is, no, unfortunately Capito can not beat Manchin. But if she runs it will make the democrats spend money and force some issues to be debated and acknowledged to exist. An informed electorate can demand accountability.
e don’t pick pockets in WV, and we had a right to get some benefits. We are US citizens, too. I remember being completely ignored, for years, when the defense plants, military bases, roads, and other goodies were handed out.
There are more welfare people in NYC and Chicago than we have total population.

She is popular, and it sure is anti socialist Democrat feeling in the air.
She is also more liberal than Governor Manchin and less popular than he is right now.
West Virginia? Self Sufficient? West Virginia is not in debt because the rest of us are paying for your existence in one way or another, thanks in large part to Sheets. My wife is proud to hail from West Virginia and she'll be the first one to tell you that. I've worked in WV dozens of times, everywhere from Wheeling to Blue Field to the coal field in the SW part of the state. There is very little of WV that I haven't seen. The most common sight I saw standing in line at a grocery store in any part of the state was the three people in front of me in line all using food stamps. It's plain as day what is going on in WV. Maybe you need to get out more.....

Where would you suggest I go? I don’t think your “part time observing WV” qualifies you to tell us, who have lived here our entire lives, how things are. Why are you attacking WV instead of the democrats? Reminds me of a certain Arizona lawsuit.
I am a magna cum laude college graduate who has visited NYC, LA, Mexico, Florida every winter, and I live in W.Va. because it is the best place, in my opinion, to live.

Yes EV, Joe Manchin is pro-life and a fiscal conservative. Believe it or not. Shelley has been able to hedge on the life issue enough to get elected. She is not as conservative as Joe IMO.
Amen. thank you neighbor. People have taken up the habit of beating up on WV and it is undeserved. Sure we have our share of welfare folk, but as you say, WV has maybe a million and a half people in the whole state. Life has never been easy for the people of WV. They have a long history of being exploited by outside powers (timber & coal), and by the government welfare programs which did the same to the poor Appalachians that it did to the blacks in urban cities. It robbed them of self-reliance and self-respect. Still the majority of WVirginians are good hard working conservative people.

Scarily enough, we have a congressional district like that here in Minnesota. It’s the 8th CD - northeastern Minnesota.
Pro-life, pro-gun, pro-military - and pro-union. That’s the best way to describe it.
Lots of hard-working, decent people up there - who’ll vote for anyone who’s got endorsements from the big labor unions.
