A powerful Republican state senator said Monday he plans to sponsor legislation creating a one-of-a-kind Utah guest-worker card for immigrants.
In doing so, Sen. Howard Stephenson will challenge federal authority as sole enforcer of immigration law and present a business-backed alternative to Arizona-style reform.
“I believe the states have the power to regulate this a lot more than other people realize,” said Stephenson, who also heads the business-backed Utah Taxpayers Association.”We can have a legal guest-worker permit system in the state of Utah that would be regulated by the private sector at the cost of the employer and employee.”
Utah’s unemployment rate is 7 percent, don’t see them needing a larger workforce to meet demand anytime soon.
This is a clear example of the tone deafness pervasive in the Republican party as a whole. Either they are collapsing into a pile of jello when confronted by the Democrats or they advocate stupidity like this.
I personally don’t have a problem with a guest-worker program, through which applicants go through a screening and placement process (NOT legalizing current illegals!!), so long as our economy can support it.
We need non-citizens to come and do the work that the unemployed 17 pct of American workers refuse to do.

These are all smoke and mirror games by politicians who lack the intestinal fortitude to so much as just articulate the truth.
This is not a new idea and in Germany where I grew up they tried this exact same thing 30-40 years ago with Greek, Yugoslav, and Turkish labor (Gastarbeiter) that was pouring in illegally. The outcome of this these programs is predictable, because the mechanisms in place to control this, the nature of human beings, the political process/forces involved, all work against it's long term success. These programs are designed to show action by a politician. They show a moderate middle ground position on the issue that is supposed to give the politician some traction with the conservative/right side while not alienating the left. That's the political maneuvering, but reality is these programs are no answer at all. Historically, these programs have delivered failure after failure, even in nations where they have more data on their citizens and the security environment is far more permissive and laws for immigration and deportation more favorable for maintaining control, as in Germany.
This falls into the category of “deception.”
I find the phrase “regulated by the private sector” hilarious.
It is an oxymoron. It shows the complete mendacity of the man.
The GOP has to purge exactly these types of idiots from their ranks to be taken seriously.

You have to forget about political party. It no longer exists. The words Democrat and Republican are just labels for someone to get elected.
What we have now is 1) Conservatives, 2) Liberals 3) Marxists. Each one attaches affixes a label to themselves in order to get eleected.
Clearly this guy should be a US SENATOR!! Wouldn’t it be just DANDY to have another McCain/ Grahamnesty/Snowe/Collins/Voinovich.....And then he could run for president—after he decided which party to represent.

My wife was raised in a small town in UTah. Very rural, quite, pretty much crime free. No one had door locks when she grew up there.
Now - the place is overrun with Mexicans. 10 ‘familes’ to one house, crime and drugs all over - they ust had a cop murdered by an illegal - one that had been deported 3 times - who was dealing drugs.
And this asshat thinks this new ‘program’ will help?
My wife no longer wishs to even visit the couple of remaning relative in the AO. She doesn’t feel safe. The Third World is here now.
