In a bid to remake the enforcement of federal immigration laws, the Obama administration is deporting record numbers of illegal immigrants and auditing hundreds of businesses that blithely hire undocumented workers.
The Immigation and Customs Enforcement agency anticipates deporting about 400,000 people this fiscal year, nearly 10 percent above the Bush administration's 2008 total and 25 percent more than were deported in 2007. The pace of company audits has roughly quadrupled since former President Bush's final year in office.

The obama ICE is going after more businesses, BUT not detaining illegals found . The illegals are “expected” to self deport. The government is counting all these illegals as being deported because ICE cost them their jobs.( or at least temporarily). Ain’t government “math” wonderful.

In descending order of importance, the memo cites people convicted of a misdemeanor, those caught near the border and individuals who have failed to obey deportation orders.

Another point. This is also an attempt by the administration to undermine Arizona's case for their immigration law. If AZ wins the suit it could rewrite the balance of power between the feds and the states. The feds don't want more checks on their power. If Obama starts enforcing the law, then AZ can't claim that they had no choice but to protect themselves since the feds wouldn't. Then once the case is over and the Administration has AZ's law quashed, they can stop their superficial enforcing the law again.
It's also an election year, and the Obama Administration has to woo the angry people back until after the election.

There is not one word about closing the border in this article. Fine I agree, employers should be targeted. But that is not the first or even 42nd step. The Mexican mafia members are not working in a factory somewhere.
Close the flipping border, tax out of country cash transfers at 25% and then work on the rest. 400,000 getting deported probably will not come up to half of the number coming in each year.

I agree. Obama is probably speeding deportations of the backlog of criminal aliens. For the rest, he has declared a defacto amnesty. Even when a business is raided, the illegals are not detained. All of the nuisance crime with illegal immigration (identity theft, driving without insurance, shoplifting, fraudulent tax returns, ...) is swept aside.
