Family and pediatrician tangle over gun question

It was a question Amber Ullman least expected Wednesday from her children's pediatrician.

Do you keep a gun in the house?

When the 26-year-old Summerfield woman refused to answer, the Ocala doctor finished her child's examination and told her she had 30 days to find a new pediatrician and that she wasn't welcome at Children's Health of Ocala anymore.

"Whether I have a gun has nothing to do with the health of my child," said the mother of three girls.

She should make a formal complaint to the FL state medical licensing board for a professional boundary violation.

Say no. Pursue legal action as necessary.

Myself ? I would say “no” and find another doctor. Leave it. I don’t like people knowing whether there is, or isn’t. And I definately don’t like getting authorities involved when they don’t need to be.

It is not the doctors’ business if I have guns in my home.

I think he did her a favor. Why would you want a pediatrician that retarded? Find another good doc and be sure to post comments about his/her idiocy on the various doctor review sites.

File a complaint with the medical licensing agency and the insurance companies. Contact the NRA for recommendations as to legal assistance.

Pediatrician by in large are POSs. What type of “training” does it take to be a “pediatrician”?

My children’s pediatrician asked us that at every checkup. It always bothered me. He also asked me all kinds of questions about my kids’ social life because we homeschool.

(Those of you who homeschool know what I’m talking about, people act like we keep our kids locked away or something - when fact is my kids have more time to socialize than they did in public school, but I digress...)

The day I said “no more” was when he gave a wishywashy answer on Obamacare. We found our new ped through FRiends here. He has written in his blog against Obamacare, and we loved him in person. We received none of the intrusive questions that have nothing to do with my kids’ health.

This is very common. Pediatricians across the country are asking this question.

They also ask personal questions of kids who are old enough to see the doctor without a parent present.

Was the doctor planning to break into the patient’s house? Otherwise, the question is not relevant. Perhaps the doctor should be reported to the state medical board for investigation of child endangerment.

I suspect there is some national program about logging gun ownership by MDs. It came about at the same time UCC church playgroups tried to find out which families had guns, so that you would not have to worry if you sent your kids’ over to the Dubrowski’s house, they were on record as being “gun free”.

I think AMA started this? And now that we will have national electronic medical records available to LEO and Govt coast to coast (but not you), questions like this and others become very important.

This practice is happening throughout the medical practice. I had my annual physical and there were 3 questions related to guns. I left them blank. It is another method of collecting data. Children are not in the habit of lying to a doctor.

She is right. Of couorse she could have answered by asking, " Do you have one in yours?"

Next thing you know, the left will put the question on census forms.

If I had my child in an office and a doctor asked me that question, I would direct my child to get up, get dressed, and on the way out tell the doctor it is none of his business if we have chrystal chandaliers, guns, furs, oriental rugs or no furniture at all in our house..and by the way the there will be complaints registered with the medical association, medical society and a letter to the editor in the local paper warning other parents of his inappropriate questions.

“”If I don’t have to register my gun with the state of Florida, why do I have to tell my pediatrician whether I own a gun?” Tom Ullman asked.”

You don’t have to register, but if you answer the question it will go into what are going to be the governments electronic records for health care.

Kids in the house? A gun? My, my... we can’t have that.

Past retirement age? Somewhat infirm? A gun? My, my... we can’t have that.

Capiche?
