Reporting from Washington As campaign foils go, George W. Bush was a very effective one for Democrats in 2006 and 2008, even though his name never appeared on a ballot. But now, as the party seeks to defend the majorities it built based in part on Bush fatigue, Democrats find that invoking the former president's name doesn't pack quite the same punch.
New polling shows that Bush's standing among the electorate remains weak, and that voters for the most part still fault him for the nation's ailing economy. But as President Obama's popularity has stagnated, Democratic strategists say that drawing simple comparisons between the two leaders is not a surefire strategy to move voters their way.
"Our current data brings into question the notion that you can run against Bush and win," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Obviously Bush is not popular. The question is: Does it help Obama to run against the past in debating the future?"
A Quinnipiac survey last week found that Obama's "political honeymoon ended," and put his job approval rating at a new low of 44%. When voters were asked whether he was a better president than Bush, 42% said yes, and 32% said no. The gap was narrower among voters who identify themselves as independents, a potentially troublesome finding for Democrats.
A survey from Gallup released last week found that Bush's personal favorability rating had increased 10 points since the last such poll in 2009. At 45%, it was just 7 points behind Obama's, bringing into question whether attacking the Bush legacy would be very effective.

Actually, that’s the thing Bush deserves at least some blame for.
How could we tell if you were ever missing?
Sorry, but that’s the way I see it.

Same.
I would add:
“Nation building” with primitive barbarian dross and US tax dollars as construction materials; the inherent slur on each and every conservative individual with insipid “compassionate conservatism” confection.
Or maybe it's the only thing that IS.
If he had never listened to Rove and the frigg'n "new tone" lunacy and defended himself like any man should have, or came out and warned about Obama (it's not like they didn't know)...Maybe, just maybe, things would have been different.
But then, maybe he's a progressive and he approves of all that's happening.
And .. even though the Clintons dumped big time on Bush - after he was elected - trashed his offices in the WH, etc., left time-bomb EO’s hoping Bush wouldn’t find them, I don’t recall Bush ever mentioning Clinton’s name. In fact, Bush tried to hide the mess the Clinton staff made at the WH - but the GAO or OMB made it public.
Maybe Obama needs to take a lesson from that. But, I don’t expect he will. I have a sister who is an ultra-liberal and she never would take responsibility for anything either.
No.
Let's face it is Bush's fault. If he wasn't so disliked they would not have voted for Obamugabe. /sarc
On another note, is it time to rename the San Andreas Fault to Bush's Fault?
What? “Blame Bush” is not a good campaign strategy anymore? Uh oh!!! LOL...
Absolutely false! That was actually Bush's biggest fault.
Bush's failure to sell his policies to the sheeple, over the heads of the MSM, is indeed his greatest failure. At that point in history, the United States needed a Great Communicator, and GWB was not up to the task!
A conundrum.
I do not hate George Bush.
I am, however, greatly disappointed in him.
Not for most, or any, of the reasons that are trotted out regularly by The Usurper, his minions, or the statist news outlets. I am disappointed in him for not vigorously defending conservative principles when he had the bully pulpit of the Presidency.
I am also disappointed in him for playing into the hands of the global statists by acquiescing to the TARP program, which set the stage for further fiscal improprieties and later downright malfeasance on the part of Congress.
The weakness of George Bush's response on these issues, added to his failure to prosecute the War on Terror on the domestic publicity front, as well as on the battlefield set the stage for an even weaker John McCain to default the election to The Usurper.
These factors, combined with the treachery of RINOs at all levels of government has reminded us most painfully of the truth in Ayn Rand's words:
"In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit."
Was The Usurper's election Bush's fault? Not exclusively. But one cannot deny that in many ways, the whole political structure of the US, and the cause of objective good in the world got a black eye in that election.
Time for men of compromise to shut up and sit down. Time for men of principle to take back the nation.
President Bush and his wife were at the Texas Rangers game tonight. The camera showed him several times but the guys calling the game never said whether or not the President was recognized over the stadium’s P.A. system.
Prescription Drugs was on him but I disagree on the War on Terror. I think we need to fight radical Islam. The "Religion of peace" deal drove me nuts though.
Total BS! Based on what, the reporter's ouiji board?
“Other than the first days of the war on terror, literally days, He never lived up to what “the base” expected of him.”
You have forgotten his Supreme Court appointments, which saved the 2nd amendment among other things. Probably his most important work besides keeping the nation safe from future terrorist attacks after 9/11.
“I dont recall Bush ever mentioning Clintons name”
President Bush had true class. That is probably his 3rd most important accomplishment - restoring dignity to the office. His genuine love for and respect for the troops was legendary and he was exemplary in that area.
See my tagline.
Wasn't this the basis for the Newsweek "We Are All Socialists Now" cover?
