The Department of Energy, led by Barry Obama and DOE head Steven Chu, has decided that taking a nice, long shower is a waste of energy - and therefore should be regulated. In a move that is tantamount to an invasion of privacy, manufacturers may not meet a customer's demand for an inefficient, water-guzzling shower head. Failure to meet the 2.5 gallon per minute restriction can result in substantial fines to manufacturers (and, of course, higher costs for consumers). The fact that hot showers and baths have been shown to be effective and cheap psychological therapy - which, of course, can result in billions of dollars in savings on medical and business related expenses - seems lost on these green fascists. I know it's a small thing, but where does it end?
According to DOE lawyer Scott Blake Harris,
Did Congress limit consumer choice? Absolutely, when you waste water, you waste energy. Each multi-head shower fixture uses an extra 40 to 80 thermal units of energy per year, equivalent to 50 gallons of gasoline, or one barrel of oil.Now, last time I checked, condoms were petroleum based products, too. Perhaps Obama and the DOE would like us to only have sex once per fiscal quarter? That may be a lot for less-than-desirable guys like Harris and Chu, but I think the rest of the general public would have a problem with it.

I’ve heard stories of oil wells in Texas that produced such light, sweet crude . . . oohhhh, crude . . . . that you could put it right into your gas tank, and a guy used to do so during WWII to get around rationing. But I’m not sure I believe it.
You know, given my age and the way things appear to be going, I’m only going to ask for government identification before I open fire. I don’t want to hit the innocent.

Me personally, I am beyond cheap. I try to take 5 minute showers, even if it means stopping the water to limit my usage. I plan to install high-force low-flow toilets as soon as I can to cut back on the water used (and more expensively, the sewer fees charged) for flushing each of my old 3.6 gallon toilets.
Of course, my motivations for doing this have nothing to do with "saving" the planet... I just hate spending money on utilities.

There are several ways to have a hot shower, without “wasting” energy. For instance, in the right climate, a roof-top solar water heater could provide more than enough water for the purpose. Another alternative is a heat-recovery unit on the drain pipe. There's clearly no rationale for regulating the shower head, in these situations. (Not that there are any situations, where the regulation is justified.)
I take out the flow limiter in every shower head I buy.
When thy aren’t removable anymore thats what drills are for.
It never ends. That’s the problem. As soon as we agree to change to this lightbulb instead of that one, they are on to shower heads. Once shower heads are regulated to their liking it’ll be on to something else.
Wash, rinse, repeat until there is nothing that is not regulated. Then, and only then, will you really be free.
This isn’t fair to Laz . He frequently has to hit long cold showers.

According to NAHB the gubment are going to allow only one shower head per shower (that’s on new construction).
Maybe he's looking for an excuse. Like he ran out of water before he could get to that part.

Years ago the gas company came around installing free shower
heads. It just made us take longer showers to get the suds
off so I replaced them and threw them in a drawer.

Ours is grand too. It constantly has to be plunged, needs cleaning three times as often as a traditional model, and collects crud everywhere. Typical liberal idea, and I guarantee they don’t use them.
I wonder if they are going to regulate the water usage at Rahm and Barrack’s favorite bath house in Boystown.

From what I've heard, manufacturers are required to use increasingly less water in dishwashers and washing machines. If it continues, at some point they would be required to use NO water.
Composting toilets and waterless urinals are another branch of this "hippies in charge" insanity. They don't care about humans, human comfort, health, or sanitation. All they care about is GAIA.
A barrel of crude oil is only 42 gallons in the first place, I think.

The author was stating that 40 to 80 BTUs is equivalent to one barrel of oil or 50 gallons of gasoline not that there are 50 gallons in one barrel of oil.
One barrel of crude oil contains heavier oils than just gasoline. Depending on the oil it can be heavier or lighter; the heavier the oil the greater the BTU content. A barrel of crude could indeed contain the same number of BTUs as 50 gallons of gasoline.
It is a bit of a stretch to say that this is the intended meaning of the author I admit. Even if the author made the mistake of equating a barrel to a drum it is not grounds to discount everything he says.

A single gallon of gasoline contains over 100,000 Btu’s.
And do you think that one (42 gallon) barrel of oil contains 50 gallons of gasoline?
