The Senate Banking Committee passed the Livable Communities Act on Tuesday, moving the bill one step closer to final passage. The bill creates $4 billion in neighborhood planning grants for “sustainable” living projects and a new federal office to oversee them. Similar legislation in the House has been criticized by Republicans on the House Budget Committee, who charge that “the program’s aim is to impose a Washington-based, central planning model on localities across the country.”
In the Senate version, written by outgoing Chairman Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), the Livable Communities Act would designate $4 billion to aid local governments in planning high-density, walkable neighborhoods.
Premised on helping local governments to combat suburban sprawl and traffic congestion, the bill sets up two separate grant programs......
To administer and regulate these new grants, the bill creates the Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities (OSHC) within the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The legislation is designed to prod local communities toward high-density, public transit-oriented neighborhoods that concentrate large numbers of people into small geographic areas connected by train and bus networks.
These high-density neighborhoods would be combined with high-density commercial districts that – in theory – would reduce the need for daily driving and commuting....

There does not exist a more clear checklist for government waste, corruption and idiocy.

They're trying to do it again. And this is probably what all the "light rail" headlines are about that we keep seeing. Get rid of the cars which promote individualism and family and herd people onto more trains.

They obviously did not pay attention to the lessons of Cabrini Green.
Zoning used to be about making sure an occupancy or use was suitable for a given area. Now it is used as a tool of social engineering.
This what they are trying to do with Tysons Corner as we speak. A fairly nice area is on its way to becoming a Moscow suburb.
Cars and families ... reminds me of our trip to St. Petersburg, Russia. Families there have either one child, or years between the children. Part of it is the difficulty of managing children through the subway, trolley, etc.
Imagine our surprise to visit with three children in tow, and to be considered a large family!
Forgot to say: and “walkable” means “more opportunities to be mugged.” There is a reason why the powers-that-be in Washington, DC didn’t run Metro out to Georgetown or McLean, VA.

In a future United States, the only transport available to an individual is public transportation. Predicated on an assertion that “the oil has run out”, an increasingly totalitarian central government has ordered all personal vehicles be impounded by law. One man, a former race car driver, yearns again for his ability to choose his own roads and destiny. He reassembles his race car hidden from confiscation, and sets out for “Free California” which has broken away from the new regime, aided by a young technically savvy teen who feels alienated from this “social” society. Agents of the new government must stop this man at any cost to destroy the symbology he represents, and the instability that such a desire for personal autonomy could mean to the society. An old Korean War veteran and his F-86 Sabre jet are called into service to chase down this dangerous man, and end his flouting of the will of the state. In the words of one of the government agents, “People going where they want to, where they want to. This could set us back to the 1980s.”

Exactly — the model for this is in Moscow — saw it myself in the seventies and early eighties, pre-Gorbachev. The buildings (tenements) still stand. Families shared bathrooms with other families — horrible surroundings — no landscaping -
