With great fanfare, Gov. Martin O'Malley on Wednesday announced his use of your tax dollars to track every move made by Maryland motorists. The Democratic chief executive will spend $2 million in federal grants to double the number of roadside and mobile spy cameras, with the data centrally collected at a "fusion center" accessible to government bureaucrats.ike speed cameras and red-light cameras, Mr. O'Malley's license-plate recognition cameras photograph the plates of passing motorists. Within a matter of seconds, a computer system looks up the vehicle owner's identity and cross-references it against a "wanted" list after recording the time, date and GPS coordinates of the vehicle. All of this information will be stored at the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center located in Woodlawn, just outside Baltimore. Mr. O'Malley's plan is unique insofar as it allows tracking of persons of interest using cameras located in dozens of local jurisdictions. "We believe it's the first," Maryland State Police spokesman Gregory M. Shipley told The Washington Times. "It's certainly one of the first to network police [agencies] together like this."

Here’s an idea - how about installing spy cameras in government agencies so we know the employees are all really working.

Conservatives want to use big government to further their ideals as well (Bush wanted to overrule states' rights to pursue marijuana charges; almost every conservative was for the PATRIOT ACT which allowed big government to trace you, track you, and monitor your finances; McCain tried going after the sports supplement industry with big nanny government; almost all conservatives used the Defense of Marriage Act to federally define marriage and impose the federal definition onto the states; and, the list goes on and on); we haven't had a champion for the Constitution in a long, long time in the White House. The only people to truly stand up for liberty and the Constitution within our grand party is the Republican Liberty Caucus.
This IS spying. Maryland is not using the data only to hunt for criminals. They are also building a database of citizen movement that will be used at a later time for purposes that are not yet evident. This is Maryland, remember.
The freedom that is lost is the freedom from government surveillance.
This is the big IF.
IF they would track all vehicles that went to a mosque known for spreading the terrorist message, I'm all for it. IF they tracked all vehicles going to a known violent gang house - think of the FBI at the Corleone wedding - I'm all for that too. If in the process they track me driving by the Corleone house, I really wouldn't show up in their output.
I'm for giving good cops all the tools they need to catch the bad guys, and make my life safer.
I actually have more faith in statistical analysis of data than an opinion.

Maryland is a freak state. Maryland is so full of LIBs/DIMs/Commies/Lefties and other intellectual trash that this is nothing. Maryland also is a “sanctuary” state for illegals. Maryland also curbs your 2nd amendment rights. Maryland (mainly the WDC suburbs and Baltimore is Cretin Control. Takoma Park (a nuke-free zone) has allowed illegal aliens to vote in their elections for years. “Maryland” is one of the states on my “No way in hell would I ever live there” list. Unfortunately, that list is growing.
How many ways could YOU use the data if it were in YOUR hands Daddio?
‘A government big enough to collect all the data possible, is big enough to use that data any damn way it wishes’.
Think about it.
That is the $29 question. Given who controls this state, they will find a way. One possible use is billing people for travel through heavy traffic areas. There have already been proposals for that in Baltimore, but everyone thought that was crazy. Now here is a way to manage the billing.
I have now thought of a number of ways to use the database for espionage, to compromise operational security of any number of Govt. agencies. Since I am security for my company, I think I'll report this possibility tomorrow.
Maryland was 50th on my list of top 50 states to move to when I lost my job. Unfortunately, the only company that wanted to hire me was located here, so I had to move to the socialist paradise. I work in Baltimore but live 30 miles northeast where more sanity seems to reign.
Some western state installed cameras and shortened the yellow signal time to increase revenues. It created more accidents and didn’t generate enough revenue to pay for itself.
I do a lot of business in Dallas. They have a toll highway that runs parallel to a road with many stoplights. I gladly pay this “use” tax. It saves me time and money.
But if Maryland is going to simply charge people more with no benefit, that is just another tax.
Still don’t see a threat to my liberty.
I’d just move to Texas.
It would almost be worth your while to consider commuting down I-83 from Stewartstown, Shrewsbury, or even Glen Rock Pennsylvania, I know people who did that for years.
We considered it but we home school our kids and believe it or not, home school laws in PA a pathetically draconian, rahter than just intrusinve in MD. (They were completely non-existent in MI)
