Former Illinois Rep. Dan Rostenkowski has died, NBC News confirmed Wednesday.

Rostenkowski died peacefully at his home in Wisconsin this morning, a close friend told WMAQ. He was 82.

Rostenkowski served in Congress from 1959 to 1995 and wielded the gavel as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee for 11 years. A corruption scandal ended his 42-year career in public service. He pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud in 1996 and spent 15 months in federal prison.

In 2000, he was pardoned by President Bill Clinton in the final days of Clinton's presidency.

I thought he went to prison for years of stealing antiques and furniture from the House of Representatives.

In the end, Rostenkowski pleaded guilty two counts of mail fraud. He admitted in his plea agreement that he had converted office funds to his own use for gifts such as Lenox china and armchairs.

He admitted hiring people on his congressional payroll who did little or no official work — but took care of his lawn, took photographs at political events and family weddings, helped his family’s business and supervised the renovation of his house.

Former Rep (D) Rottencowpies had a distinguished carreer, servicing the public for 42 years.

The scandal that was the Means which ended his rapacious Ways—hence the name of the Committee—was his unique interpretation of the term ‘Food Stamps’.

Dust to dust! My late mother taught me never to speak ill of the dead. Sometimes this is a very difficult thing to accomplish.

He will have plenty of time to exchange fire resistant notes with Teddy and Byrd. When’s Charlie going to join them? Soros is way overdue but he has a spot reserved for him in one of those lower places typically reserved for early/mid 20th century European dictators.

So, essentially, he was convicted of breaking the ground that many have since trod.
