Saudi King Says Only Senior Clerics Can Issue Fatwas
Times of India ^ | Aug 12, 2010

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia issued a decree stating that only senior clerics are permitted to issue fatwas, or Islamic religious edicts, the official SPA news agency said.

It cited the text of the decree as saying that for the time being, only members of the Council of Senior Ulema (scholars) will be allowed to issue fatwas.

The ruling comes during the first week of Ramadan, the holy fasting month for Muslims worldwide.

In the decree, the Saudi monarch also asks the grand mufti, who heads the council, to submit a list of others who are qualified to issue fatwas.

The limitation is necessary because many individuals have started surpassing the authority of official religious bodies and have issued fatwas that cause disputes and dissent among Muslims, the decree said.

"We have followed this issue and noted many violations that we cannot allow. It is our religious obligation to confront it firmly to safeguard religion, preserve unity and to prevent evil," it said.

"All those who violate this order subject themselves to accountability and punishment, whoever they are, because the interests of the religion and the nation are above anything else," the king warned in the decree.

In recent months, one Saudi cleric saying music is not un-Islamic and another endorsing breastfeeding for grown men sparked a pitched battle in the ultra-conservative kingdom over who can issue fatwas.

Riyadh cleric Adel al-Kalbani said that "there is no clear text or ruling in Islam that singing and music are haram" or religiously forbidden.

Aside from some folk music, public performances of music are banned in Saudi Arabia, and conservatives say it is haram even in the home.

King sming, he's only a king because some BP scout hauled his ancestor off a camel and crowned his A$$ to control the oil , later intel ops came in to run the mullahs(but don't tell anyone, who wants a peaceful world anyway?).

If it weren’t so gruesomely malevolent, Islam would just be silly, “Monty Python meets the Three Stooges” slapstick comedy.

Just an honest opinion here...but I don’t think anything the King of Saudi Arabia says matters. He’s not granted any rights over the Muslim religion and I’m pretty sure that fifty-odd Mullahs are prepared to say that.

It would be curious to note if some young punk Mullah (in his 50’s) didn’t toss around a Fatwa....and get folks riled up.

They were originally set up to be a check stop against the other, but intel agents report it's harder than herding cats.

Thanks for the new tagline. Too bad the whole thing doesn’t fit.

My pleasure. I only wish the “malevolent” part wasn’t so true.

If they didn’t have access to oil, their malevolence wouldn’t be an issue. Without petrodollars, The Islamic world would collapse back into obscurity in very short order.

I keep hoping that some brainy boy or girl finally unlocks the secret to a safe, clean energy source that will replace petroleum. There are a lot of good leads out there, hopefully it won’t be much longer.

Once the dollars dry up, the foreigners that actually run Saudi Arabia will leave and the Arabs will go back to living in tents and screwing their goats.

That would be a “win-win”... except for the poor goats.

The problem is the controls behind the curtain.

These back stage managers(Sneakyman Inc.) have been nasty F's even before all this most recent mess.

They killed Rudolph Diesel almost a century ago when bio- fuel was gonna beat crude, they even called it Diesel fuel soon after they offed him just for fun.

Hemp seed oil would have been big but Hearst propagandized it so it would not compete with his interests.

Hearst told Rockefeller how easy it is too fool people so he paid to have Prohibition to kill alcohol and alt. fuels.

You see it's a long story, and like any weed it must be pulled out by the roots or it grows back later.

Thank God. It was getting to the point that any Mo, Achmed or Abdul was issuing Fatwas. I think they even started “Fatwa of the Day”.
