White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, known for his smoothness and precision, seems to have erred egregiously twice in just weeks.
First, he speculated on TV that Democrats might lose the House, an inexcusable blunder because it is his job to omit the truth — not lie, just omit the truth — when the truth hurts. Then, there he was in print this week, deriding “professional liberals” who label President Barack Obama too moderate, saying they need “to be drug tested.”
Gibbs should have expected this would enrage liberals. Maybe that’s just what he planned.
Facing reporters Wednesday, Gibbs neither apologized nor backtracked. Instead, he doubled down. He was angry at the liberal TV pundits who bash the president, Gibbs said, standing by his words. Then he said he wasn’t the only one at the White House that felt this.
If Gibbs is purposely picking fights with the left, it’s not too surprising. In fact it’s consistent with the White House effort to position Obama closer to the center — where he traditionally needs to be for a reelection victory in 2012.

Nope, he doesn't. Clinton had to operate in a southern state for all those years. He can speak the language of moderation pretty comfortably and convincingly. Obama can't. He has no idea how to communicate with "typical white people".

Simply doing a head fake to the center won't fool anyone on the left or right. Obama's got to make actual moves toward the center for the perception to stick. In just a year and a half, he's proven beyond a shadow of doubt that he is as far left as they come. No one is going to fall for a bunch of centrist-sounding blather or grandstanding now.

I'd like to amend that. The job of Robert Gibbs is to omit little pieces of the truth ... gently and gradually chipping away the most painful bits, until what's left of the truth doesn't hurt any more.
Politico very cleverly played centrist early on, planning all along to come to SOBama’s aid when the election drew near and things heated up. Expect them to become increasingly blatant in their hard leftism between now and November.

Um, he was lying, and his leftist base knew it and approved to get him elected.
I do not disagree.
Am I the only one who thinks where a person is on the political spectrum is their policy statements and actions and not criticisms on one person or another?
I was rather startled that people were surprised by politician's behavior after an election, when it usually followed their policy statements and always followed their policy behavior.
For example, I knew President Carter was naive about foreign policy before he was elected—but many people were startled by his naivete.
I knew President H.W. Bush was left of Reagan and not a staunch conservative—I wasn't surprised he raised taxes, but I was surprised he broke his word.
I knew President Bush had promised to protect the US steel industry, so I was not surprised he supported some trade restrictions.
I knew President Obama was very left in his economic beliefs so I haven't been surprised by his economic failures—they're about as big as I expected.
