PANAMA CITY, Florida (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Saturday backed off remarks that appeared to endorse a proposed Muslim cultural center near the site of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York City, saying he only supported the organizers' right to build it.
At a White House event on Friday, Obama seemed to offer his support for the construction of Cordoba House near the site known as "Ground Zero" in lower Manhattan. U.S. conservatives and many New Yorkers object to the project.
The 13-story building will include meeting rooms, a prayer space, an auditorium and a swimming pool.
His Friday comments drew criticism from conservatives and others, and the president sought to clarify them during a trip to Florida on Saturday.
"I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there," Obama told reporters while visiting the Gulf Coast.
"I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding. That's what our country is about."

His statement Friday night seemed unequivocal to me.
Too late. He needs to be held to his endorsement and we need to be asking every Democrat office-seeker if they agree with their president that the mosque at Ground Zero should be built.
Obama stepped in this big time and the GOP *must* pound on it and force all Democrats to agree with him or disagree. This is a wedge issue that can be used to pull a lot of votes away from the Dems.

Remember a few days after 9-11 when the House (and maybe the Senate) stepped outdoors and sung "God Bless America" in unison? Don't you know a lot of Democrats, including Obama if he was there, probably either sang through clenched teeth or just pretended to mouth the words.

“But let me be clear. As a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. (Applause.) And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan...”

Well if you believe in the principle of owning private property, then the Muslims do have the right to build their mosque on the land as long as they purchased it. Yes, we don’t like the decision but we really can’t deny them the right to build it.
Not necessarily as a general rule. I recognize that people have the right to do all kinds of things without thereby endorsing or encouraging them to do it. For instance, I recognize people have the right to vote for Democrats. That doesn't mean I endorse their doing so.
But in this specific case you're right. He originally stated it was a local matter, and then jumped into the middle of it.
