‘The Expendables’ Reminds Us Why Matt Damon Sucks

There’s much to like about “The Expendables,” especially the simple straight-forward plot, all the B-movie mayhem you could possibly ask for, and two unapologetic hours of masculinity – which may be two hours more than we’ve seen in all of the last decade put together. These boys smoke cigars, drink beer while piloting airplanes, and return us to those glorious pre-Oprah days when stoicism was still a virtue and real men didn’t gush about their inner-emotional lives like 13 year-old girls drunk on Dr. Pepper at a slumber party. There are also things to dislike, especially that evil shaky-cam which has done more to ruin a good time at the movies than liberal speechifying. John Sturges knew what a tri-pod was. Does anyone really think they can improve on Sturges?
Sylverster Stallone’s glorious throwback to the brawny 80s is also about something, and it’s not Bourne-ian self-discovery. It’s about something that actually matters. And in this age of nihilism when believing in anything bigger than self is considered old-fashioned, unsophisticated and naïve, that’s both refreshing and important. Mickey Rourke, who has a small but showy supporting role as the proprietor of the tattoo parlor that serves as the Expendables’ hangout, explains it with a single word. I won’t spoil anything, but without this scene, this important turning point, “The Expendables” wouldn’t be half the movie it is.
Stallone plays Barney Ross (probably not his real name), the leader of a band of American mercenaries who, along with Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner (Dolph Lundgren), Yang (Jet Li), Toll (Randy Couture), and Caesar (Terry Crews), is willing to go most anywhere and kill most any bad guy for a price.

Everything looked off, shaky and like it was shot on a home cam until I figured out how to turn off the enhancement.

The last roll I saw Mickey Rourke play, it looked like he could eat Eric Roberts for breakfast and then start on pancakes. I’m surprised he doesn’t have his own series of “Chuck Norris” style jokes.

LOL, thanks for posting this. Now I WILL drag hubby to see this movie. Mickey Rourke is a great actor and I must see this scene.
BTW, some unions are protesting this movie, because they are mad at AH-nold. So I had already pledged on another forum to go see it if it gets picketed here.
But this is a much more POSITIVE reason to go.
enjoyed the flick very much. Saw it in Cinemark’s version of Imax (called XD)

The Expendables was good entertainment. Not feminized or PC.
There was an original movie called “The Expendables” which showcased Anthony Finetti as the main actor. I wonder if this movie is a remake.
Are yall serious with this movie? This is possibly the worst action movie I have ever seen. It’s not a man’s movie, it’s a fake man’s movie. It is so unrealistic, so corny and cheesy, and so lame it was hard to watch. Stallone and crew made so many lame jokes and were so tactically retarded it made me sick. Who carries so many guns they dont have enough mags and has to discard their weapon? Unheard of. And what is with Hollywood and pistols? Especially the double-wielding style that somehow results in effective shots at 50+ meters. You talk about girlie-men complaing about their emotions, which is pretty much every character in this movie. Why does this movie attempt to have corny love side-stories? Other things that bother me about this movie: Stallone’s makeup and perfectly teased hair, the use of berets as tactical headwear, Stallone’s six-shooter, lobbing an artillery shell and then detonating it with a pistol resulting in a huge fiery explosion (they don’t explode like that), Mickey Rourke’s purpose in life, all the stupid faux-manly jewelry and costumes, Stallone putting his guns down at the request of the chief d-bag, the 3 most legit dudes in the movie barely being used (Arnold, Bruce Willis, and Dolph), Can’t we just have an awesome movie about some manly dudes who are just really professional and realistically kill a bunch of badguys without a lame attempt at drama? This is not a movie for real men, it is a movie for overweight fake men who sit on their couch and think this dumb crap is cool, then go to their office and talk around the water cooler with their unmanly buddies about how Hollywood finally got one right.
I saw this.....,no,......endured viewing this film recently. Two thumbs up on your summary. This film was a complete waste of time, and one of the worst I’ve seen in a while. The dialog was as flat as Madonna’s singing. It was too cliche’ to be cliche’. The acting was, for the most part, forced. The banter between Stallone and Schwarzenegger was about as funny as Carrot Top, and the only plausible thing about that flick was that there were credits at the end.
The film was a disappointment and a dud. Oh well, at least I didn’t waste my time seeing Avatar.
