Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs'

Melbourne, Aug 26 (ANI): Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.

Despite its rebuttal, NASA's been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates - 2012.

Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale. The 2012 storm has the potential to be even more disruptive.

"The general consensus among general astronomers (and certainly solar astronomers) is that this coming Solar maximum (2012 but possibly later into 2013) will be the most violent in 100 years," News.com.au quoted astronomy lecturer and columnist Dave Reneke as saying.

"A bold statement and one taken seriously by those it will affect most, namely airline companies, communications companies and anyone working with modern GPS systems.

Put everything on Discover Card please, they jacked my rate to 29.8% when the check we mailed supposedly never made it and I am still pissed at them for doing that.

Send in your next two payments via “Certified Mail, Return Receipt”. It costs a bit more but they have to sign for it. I did that and once they realized that I was tracking the receipt dates all the fun and games stopped.

yes i agree with your statement and to add to that- NASA is fearmongering- what’s next? if you don’t convert to muslim you will be a crispy critter from the solar storms?

Oh, and another thing, Congress just turned down a few million dollars that would have prepared us for this thing.

Can't say I'm not pleased by that. I'll trust my own preparations: Being right with my Maker.

Whatever event is to come (or not) congress is certainly not the answer.

Seriously folks.... look at the hard science behind this. I’ve been following this since 1992 and seeing it develop long before it hit any news.

This has a lot more science that Al’s man made global warming. The current magnetic north pole has a daily wobble of 85 km as it moves across Canada at an accelerating rate. This wobble is directly effected by the solar storms per the Canadian Geophysics web site monitoring the daily movement.

No reason to fear, but we are in for one heck of a ride....

This was some time ago, so the memory is a bit vague, but I believe it had something to do with the Web Bot project.

I know, I know - not the Holy Grail of reporting sites, it's true, but even if this were scientifically verifiable at the present time, do you really think at this juncture we'd be getting a statement to that effect from JPL? Or anyone else of “stature”?

Neither do I.

Is that what's going to happen? I dunno. It may not. But it may, too.

Revelation states at the appropriate time that the end days will come “like a thief in the night”. In other words, it would be upon us before we really knew and understood what is happening.

Personally, even if this happens, I don't think it will be TEOTWAWKI. It could, however, have a massive effect on civilization, a deleterious one.

Not a mass extinction event, but an event that brings with it a lot of big problems.

In any event, I guess we'll find out soon enough, won't we?

CA....

That there will be a solar storm of that magnitude is undeniable. Saying with certainty the exact year may be pushing the limits of current knowledge, but the evidence that such things occur on fairly regular cycles and is overdue isn’t stretching the limits at all. Prediction of solar cycles has been pretty accurate for many decades and prediction of specific events is becoming accurate a year or more in advance. The last event of this magnitude was 1859 and destroyed much of the telegraph infrastructure and included the burning of many telegraph offices as a consequence. Today it would be catastrophic because most of our electronic circuitry would fail. Think about what that would mean and prepare just in case. Think about the current civilization suddenly thrust into a mid 19th century technological age. Invest in seeds, survival food, weapons and buggy whips. The Amish will repopulate the US. Much of the third world won’t miss a beat.

Hopefully it’ll just hit the muslim part of the planet, with Mecca as Ground Zero.

“Being right with my Maker.”

correct there!

The frustrating thing is that it wouldn’t take a lot of money or effort to provide a reasonable safeguard against this threat.

In a way, I think we are so screwed up I would almost welcome something like this =/

There was a government commission a couple of years ago (which you can find here;http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CBoQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.empcommission.org%2Fdocs%2FA2473-EMP_Commission-7MB.pdf&ei=1QJ4TODcKY2lnQfuz8X3AQ&usg=AFQjCNGgTeP3oRfX1z1uxpPwyXzGmRaI3Q&sig2=BlXivIqALR1G0lCQAd9G6w) that suggested that if the worst case scenario happened then 90% of the population would be dead in a year’s time.

I happen to agree that something is amiss - something is coming.

But this Mayan stuff? These projections by people who try to put man-made science on everything? Those who would say a dead society had the answers?

No proof beyond Gods Word is needed.

Live right. Prepare as the Spirit leads you.

Those of us that will die -will die.

Any safeguards are provided by God. If I find myself alive after a global catastrophe, it won't be because I'm cute..I'm betting God has something for me to do.

Actually, I heard it was caused by hippie Priuses, tofu and fluorescent bulbs.
We should spend our remaining two year chastising them for their lifestyle choices!

This 2012 stuff. The mayan calender. What makes a barbaric, now extinct society, the end-all-be-all of the end of times?

Wise, pre-Latinas.

Thanks Captain Beyond.
in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs
I guess we've got nothing left to live for. ;') [inside joke for Prog Rock fans *only*]

I think it's *possible* that this estimate *may* be *just a tad* too high. ;')
