U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Thursday ranked Chicago’s Big Brother network of well over 10,000 public and private surveillance cameras as one of the nation’s most extensive and integrated — and Mayor Daley wants to make it even bigger.

“Cameras are the key. They are a deterrent. They solve crimes. It deals with terrorism. It deals with gangs, guns and drugs in our society.” --------------------------------- Oh really? Then why is Chicago murder capital of US? Perhaps if they would spend more money on community policing rather than spying on law-abiding US citizens, they could actually solve crimes and protect the citizens of Chicago.

Just came back from the safest place for a vacation....
Norwegian Pearl cruise ship.

There are camera’s in every public area and passageway.
No passenger or crew can get away with criminal behavior
on a cruise ship like that.

Money for 10,000 cameras to police Chicago but no effort to stop them from coming across the border.

I’ll bet fewer than half are functional or even still in place.

Napolitano should read some of the local chicago cop blogs, they tell different story about these security cameras

Irony is that Chicago is a beautiful city, and most areas are safe—the “bad” neighborhoods need more funds targetted towards community policing.

Chicago does not need more cameras—in bad areas or the Mag mile shopping district because they don’t seem to detour or solve crimes.

Noob, there’s a vast difference between a ship and land.

Furthermore, Protectionism is the first step in Socialism/Communism.

Chicago is a good counter-example, but the UK is better. They have more cameras than just about any other “first world” nation, but they are still succumbing to sharia law...

That ship is bigger than a lot of small towns.
2400 passengers + 1100 crew
4+ miles of public passageways
Thousands of square foot of public areas including a theater which seats
1500 and restaurants seating 2000 people at any one time.

My wife and I got separated and it took 2+ hours to find each other.

You’re still in a self-contained environment. You’re still observing and monitoring passengers and crew. I’m sure there is no traffic traveling through the ship, let alone automobiles and semi’s, or traffic lights. The only time you’re not surrounded by water is when the ship is docked in port.

You stated:

“No passenger or crew can get away with criminal behavior
on a cruise ship like that.”

Taking one trip on a cruise liner, and never witnessing a crime doesn’t automatically mean there were none. There’s over 3,000 individuals on the ship, and you claim that there is no crime? How would you know? And if there was, I’m sure the captain and crew would let all the passengers know, yes. /s

A relative of mine has been working on a cruise liner for several years. Judging by the stories that’s been shared, I’d say you don’t know what you’re talking about.

I have to wonder why you, noob, would support public surveillance.

I just feel safer when camera’s are present.
There are actual cases where a child kidnapper was
identified via surveillance camera records.

I have no problem with camera’s in PUBLIC areas.

In the past, it never would have bothered me; but since the regime change, I am concerned about them...

did you hear about the recent ruling where government can come on your driveway and surreptitiously place a GPS device on your car without a warrant? Wow, times are changing. So, no, I don’t like cameras. In Chicago, it seems that the statistics would indicate that cameras have not reduced crime.

I draw a line at camera’s which constitute invasion of
privacy. And yes, I do not trust anything about Obama regime.
