The mosque developers are tax deadbeats.
Sharif El-Gamal, the leading organizer behind the mosque and community center near Ground Zero, owes $224,270.77 in back property tax on the site, city records show. El-Gamal's company, 45 Park Place Partners, failed to pay its half-yearly bills in January and July, according to the city Finance Department.
The delinquency is a possible violation of El-Gamal's lease with Con Edison, which owns half of the proposed building site on Park Place. El-Gamal owns the other half but must pay taxes on the entire parcel.

New York could really benefit by having a law like Maryland does. No state license will be granted/renewed unless you are filed and paid up in all your state taxes.
Also, Consolidated Edison owns 50% of that building. They are now saying they may have to take another look at the “lease”. Interesting turn of events...
Why doesn’t Con Ed void the lease for the tax deficiency and effectively end the whole project? Con Ed’s ratepayers are effectively paying these unpaid taxes for the Islamic center; they all should be screaming.

AS I was listenng to the sermon this morning, my mind was swirling with thoughts.
This building has nothing to do with a house of worship. The only reason it has a prayer room or mosque within it is because then it becomes tax deductable.
It’s all about the money. Remove the prayer area, and see if it qualifies for a house of worship.

I think this cabal has even more despicable goals than tax deductions.
