Some Evangelicals on Defensive over partnering with Glenn Beck
CNN Belief Blog ^ | Aug. 27, 2010 | Dan Gilgoff

A handful of prominent evangelical activists are defending their decision to attend television host Glenn Beck's conservative rally in Washington this weekend after some Christians complained that evangelicals shouldn't be partnering with Beck because of his Mormon faith.

"There is no need to 'de-Christianize' each other over the matter," wrote Jim Garlow, an influential California pastor, in a five-page memo this week arguing that evangelicals can attend Beck's rally and partner with the television and radio personality in good conscience.

"Glenn Beck is being used by God - mightily," Garlow wrote in the memo, which was obtained by CNN. "The left loves to slam him and do so viscerally and often with vulgarities. Glenn is not perfect... But his expose on America's sins is stellar."

I was at the rally yesterday. Nary a word about Mormonism.

Yeah, he probably talks too much about his faith on television, but yesterday seemed different. He had others talk about their faith and more importantly, he helped people in audience think about their own faith as well.

What I heard was Beck encouraging all people to come (back) to God, regardless of their religious affiliation. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a spike in church attendance today because of Beck's words yesterday.

Amazing feat, even for a Mormon.

"He understands receiving Christ as savior."

Mormons say this all the time which convinces many that they are christians.

However, it is generally not known that Mormons think of Jesus differently than orthodox christians do. Mormons think that they will become gods after death in the same way that Jesus is a god (small "g"). Mormons think they will rule other worlds in the same way Jesus rules this one. They also think Jesus is Lucifer's brother.

Pretty weird stuff. That being said, politics is about coalitions. Remember we had to join with Stalin to fight Hitler. Not saying, of course, that Beck is Stalin...far from it. Just making the point that all people who are joining in the fight against socialistic atheism and all that that implies in America are on our side at this time. They are strong allies on present political issues.

Right and Wrong in one’s life.

Good and Evil in government.

THOSE have nothing to do with one’s religious beliefs.

We can and must ALL work together to re-make America toward the ideal of a Constitutional Republic - We The People - A More Perfect Union - with a government of, by and for the people.

This message crosses all faiths, and there should be NO support whatsoever for nit-picking Glenn Beck or anyone else in this regards.

IMHO

CNN's attempt at CREATING DIVISION where there is none tells you WHY they have NO viewership.

They DO NOT report the news. They stir up and slant.

Hands down, they win America's one dimensional news reporting award.

My mom used to tell a story from her childhood in Alabama.

She sat watching a Baptist minister arguing with a minister from the First Christian Church. They were debating whose church was better, and the dispute started to get a little heated.

Finally, the Baptist stood up and yelled “I’m a Baptist and I’ll always be a Baptist. I’ll NEVER become a Christian!”

Beck, who many evangelicals say is not a Christian because of his Mormon beliefs, says on his website that the Friday event "will help heal your soul."

So does the Catholic church, the Eastern orthodox church, and the non Evangelical Protestant churches.

Mormons and the left and CNN strive to convey the image that only those right wing Evangelicals don't recognize Mormonism as Christian.

Yeah, we all believe that a Baptist minister would not know he was a Christian.

The one, single (but very serious) character flaw with almost all conservatives, is the tendency to “go on the defensive”.

STOP IT.

Please. Put liberals on the defensive, but never back down.

I am no fan of the Mormon religion but Glenn Beck is an American who wants the best for American and the best from Americans.

I believe Beck is a Christian who doesn't know the theology behind Mormonism; and I don't think the Mormon leadership is interested in educating him about it.

Has anyone ever heard Beck specificially make factual statements about distictive tenets of the Mormon faith? The answer is "No."

Exactly why do they have to defend themselves?

I don't know. That is the article's title, not mine.

Beck: “people aren’t recognizing [Obama’s] version of Christianity.”

For one thing, Christian's typically do not use prayer rugs.

I agree.

Christians should pray for Beck’s salvation rather than shun him.

feat, even for a Mormon.

I think it is very likely that Beck is simply a Christian who is a member of the Mormonm Church without understanding of the fraudulent/cultic teachings of Mormonism.

“As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:9

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine ye have learned; and avoid them.” Romans 16:17

I agree with you. Mormonism is a false gospel, and Glenn Beck represents/supports/advertises Mormonism by means of his programs.

“How could he constantly talk about his Mormanism (which is NOT CHRISTIANITY but a works based cult) and truly understand the concept of salvation through Christ.”

Who gives a horse poo. I have never know a Mormon who seemed to me like a bad person. As an Evangelical Christian, I have no problems whatsoever with Mormons.

We have Islamist terrorists and Marxists to worry about. Mormons should be the absolute last of our worries.

I never am gonna be worried about the OSMOND FAMILY banging down my front door and beheading me.

Talk about damning us with faint praise! LOL! That's setting the bar pretty low. "Mormons--at least they won't decapitate you."
