California bill to ban plastic bags fails

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- California's Senate has voted down a measure that would have banned plastic bags at grocery stores.

The new ban was rejected by a 21 to 14 vote late Tuesday. The ban would have included grocery stores, convenience stores and drugstores.

The California Assembly passed the legislation in June.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had said he would have signed the measure into law, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Environmental groups such as the Sierra Club encouraged Californians to contact their state senators to push for the measure.

The group Heal the Bay produced what it calls a "mockumentary," narrated by actor Jeremy Irons, called "The Majestic Plastic Bag" that charts the life of a plastic bag. The video is on YouTube.

The measure had its opponents, too.

The American Chemistry Council criticized California Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, who proposed the bill.

A store my wife goes to sells canvas bags with nice strong straps for very cheap. She uses them over and over and can even wash them.

Seems to me to be a good solution. No plastic bags with straps that either break or dig into your hands and then get dumped and wind up all over the place, and no paper meaning less trees cut.

It works for us.

If only there was some type of biodegradable material that the bags could be made of. Perhaps something made from a renewable resource, maybe some type of plant fiber.

You could even hope that they would be stiff enough to stand up on there own and allow easy loading of the groceries

So, we can't use plastic and we can't use paper. I gather I am supposed to collect an assortment of some 12 odd bags to lug to and from the grocery store each time. Cuz I don't have enough crap to think about.

Besides, sometimes the bag is part of the shopping experience. Which would explain why leftists hate them. Make life as unpleasant as possible, that's their motto.

Biodegradability is not really an issue even though most people think it is.

Plastic packaging is routinely criticized because it doesn’t decay in landfills, but neither does most other packaging. Paper, cardboard and other organic materials-while technically biodegradable-tend to remain intact in the airless confines of a landfill. These mummified materials actually use much more landfill space than plastic packaging. 12 plastic grocery bags will fit in the space occupied by one paper bag.

Wash your food thoroughly, clean the counter with strong antiseptics, and cook everything to at least 180 degrees for 2 minutes.

You are right about that.

I have 4 bags about 16 in x 16 in x 16 in D,
made from hemp and they are the strongest
thing around.

I fill myself and I can get approx. 8 plastic bags worth
in 2 hemp bags. Long straps and short straps so
I can carry over my shoulder or by hand.

The only thing is you have to remember to grab them from the car.

I remember the advent of plastic bags in the 70’s. They were touted by the environmentally ‘conscious’ of the day as being an attractive alternative to destroying living trees for the sake of paper bags. Granolas were walking around asking each other, “Do you know how many trees had to die to make that bag”? Never mind that the answer was in the neighborhood of 1/10000th of one tree, it was the sentiment that mattered apparently. Giant Foods even issued books (printed on paper) celebrating their socially responsive policies. Concurrently, they also dedicated an aisle in the store to Generic products. No brand names, just the product name in black and white. Paper Towels, macaroni, maple syrup, and my favorite, Beer which was surprisingly good (and cheap!). Just a white can with one word printed on it in black...BEER. It still makes me laugh just thinking about it. I’m sorry, what were we talking about? Oh right, you tried those gel inserts for your shoes...so what did you think? Do they work? Uh huh. Uh huh.

Plastic bags are useful.

Very much so. We use them for doggie-poo, to line our smaller trash cans with, for lunch bags, etc..

It works for us.

Sounds like you'd be happy to impose this "solution" on all people. What are you doing on this conservative forum, noobie?

I remember when the econuts pushed recycled plastic bags over the traditional paper bags. Until they discovered that plastic bags were worse for the environment.

I get paper and use them for my garbage.

But then I’m a sinner because I have garbage, period.

I should be composting all scraps, recycling the papers, and sorting all of the plastics.

Next thing you know democrats will declare the lowly aglet is an existential threat to this 6,585,000,000,000,000,000,000 ton ball of iron we live on and must be regulated.

Can these fools make themselves any more irrelevant?

"no paper meaning less trees cut"

Hey stupid lib -- the trees cut are grown in specialized farms just for that purpose, often right next to a paper production facility. Again, why are you here? And the modifier is "fewer", not 'less'.

Me too. Plastic bag ban in my hometown...local 2nd hand store tells me they will use paper bags for next month, then start charging for them.

I’m so glad the bag ban bill died. Now, I can free up much needed storage space of the bundles of plastic bags I’ve been hoarding. I’ll be going back to my re-useable bags and dumping the thousands of plastics I’ve amassed in the recycling bin.

Ironic, ain’t it? That’s Caleee-fahnya!

...manner of light bulbs you use (for energy consumption, not toxicity)...

Do you (all) remember the absolute frenzy the nanny-staters went through to push us to get rid of our mercury thermometers? Their pushing the far more toxic gaseous mercury into our homes is both ironic and hypocritical in the extreme.
