"State of emergency declared in North Carolina," the WECT News 6 headline informs us. "Governor Bev Perdue has declared a State of Emergency for North Carolina in anticipation of Hurricane Earl's arrival." From blogger John Jacob H:
"Upon Governor Beverly Perdue’s declaration of a State Of Emergency on September 1, 2010 Dove Hunters, Concealed Carry Handgun Licensees, Target Shooters and all other gunowners cannot possess, transport or use firearms off their personal property as per N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-288.7"

But time's up for North Carolina gun owners. They can either obey the law, and go defenseless if they have to leave their homes, or just say the hell with stupid, evil anti-defense edicts and take their chances they won't be caught and punished--providing they survive their encounter with the "authorities".
Government, of course, as usual, has things exactly Bizarro-World backwards. It's when the security of a free state is imperiled that the right of the people to keep and bear arms is most necessary.
What an outrageous choice to force a supposedly free human being to make. Especially when we've seen what can happen when unarmed people are caught trying to get to safety by the "only ones" who can "legally" bear arms in an emergency.
As I asked when commenting on that atrocity:
"If you were trying to get to safety with your loved ones and had to make your way through a no man's land populated by looting predators and worse, would you go defenseless?"
Well, would you? Even if you lived in North Carolina?...

If a state can arbitrarily suspend the 2nd Ammendment, then I propose that my state suspend the 16th Ammendment so I don’t have to pay those pesky taxes anymore.
We either have a Constitution, and we are all protected by this document; or we do not. If the State Gov’t THINKS they can bypass my Constitutional rights in this manner; then by the same authority I demand that I no longer pay Income Tax.
WTF!? How can people in NC be dumb enough to vote for garbage like this? I recall post-Andrew in S. Miami that owning a gun was a really good thing if you were a citizen.
It’s our duty as Americans to disobey unconstitutional edicts such as this just as soldiers must disobey illegal orders.

That was confiscation. Congress has since enacted legislation prohibiting it.
This is simply taking them outside your home. But, there's already a court challenge filed (before this occurrence), brought to you by the same folks that overturned the handgun ordinance in Chicago.

So what the governor is saying is that those without permits, i.e gang members, shall be allowed to keep their guns where ever and when ever, but, those with permits and law abiding citizens are not allowed to have them outside their homes ... K ... got it ....

Isn’t this one of those times when people really need their guns? I don’t get it.
A gun’s purpose is to protect its owner and his or her family. It is not tied to a house. That implies that a person is only entitled to defend themselves in a certain location. The home, while providing some marginal moral underpinning to self defense, is not the critical component to a meaningful self-defense doctrine.
The unintended consequence of NC’s stupid rule is that more families may stay home in harm’s way rather than risk running into opportunistic criminals during their evacuation.
Gov Bev Perdue was washed in with Obama, and we are pretty sure she will be washed out with him!

I don’t think they’re confiscating them, they’re just not supposed to use them. Kind of like keeping your jewelry in the safe deposit box and never getting it out to wear.

I agree, I’ve always thought of people from NC as being a lot smarter and more patriotic.
So, then only criminals will be armed.

OK, I can read. Now what happens if NC, under color of authority based on this statute, orders you to evacuate your home. In essence, they will have ordered you to give up your guns. This cannot possibly be Constitutional - and I'd like to see the first person charged with violating this (illegal) statute challenge their conviction on 2nd and 14th Amendment.
Were I a NC police officer on any level, I'd pretend not to see any guns, save those possessed by looters (whom I'd likely shoot, just on principle).

What a difference a state makes.
Here in Texas with Rita (2005) and Ike (2008) the police/sheriff let everybody know in advance to do what you had to do to protect yourself and your property.
Very few problems. One guy got shot (too bad the sob lived) trying to rob his neighbors place (there’s a nice neighbor for ya). Sheriff dept. didn’t even waste his time writing up a report. Just told the guy to come in to the sheriffs dept. when he found the time.

Whoever issued the order is a total idiot. There isn’t even any RAIN, let alone a hurricane emergency anywhere but the coastal area. This is a feeble attempt at a gun grab in a state where every able bodied male gun owner is a member of the state militia.
Gov Beverly Purdue, NC publishes a newsletter letting everyone know how popular she is with Obama Admin, and how much money she is able to get, and all her other accomplishments. She is very liberal, and has made numerous changes in NC, just like other liberal governors in other states. It will be like the federal government, if Obama is dethroned....it will take years to get the state out of debt.......

Hey I have done 2 out 3 of those things today (possessed, transported) yesterday and today and will continue tomorrow.
NC is an unusual state, RATS ci=ontrol everything and hate to say this, but most just go along.
My daughter is a US Marine who lives just across the border in Virginia. Haven’t heard any similar statement from the Virginia authorities.
Of course, one thing I have learnd (never having been a Marine) is that they stick together..
