Oval Office rug gets history wrong
Washington post ^ | September 4, 2010 | Jamie Stiehm

A mistake has been made in the Oval Office makeover that goes beyond the beige.

President Obama's new presidential rug seemed beyond reproach, with quotations from Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. woven along its curved edge.

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." According media reports, this quote keeping Obama company on his wheat-colored carpet is from King.

Except it's not a King quote. The words belong to a long-gone Bostonian champion of social progress. His roots in the republic ran so deep that his grandfather commanded the Minutemen at the Battle of Lexington.

For the record, Theodore Parker is your man, President Obama. Unless you're fascinated by antebellum American reformers, you may not know of the lyrically gifted Parker, an abolitionist, Unitarian minister and Transcendentalist thinker who foresaw the end of slavery, though he did not live to see emancipation. He died at age 49 in 1860, on the eve of the Civil War

Beige is fitting - let’s hope that it’s a sign that this administration is moving into the Autumn of its presidency. It certainly doesn’t evoke an image of “America the Beautiful”.

Depends on your age I think. I remember when they were divans, then couches, now sofas.
I called my 88 yr old aunt the other day to tell her I would be visiting. She said “well I guess I can pull out the divan”. lol I am sure it is one of those hideous things that the back folds down on. rofl

No, it doesn’t. Any motel that cheap doesn’t have suites.

Did you notice the wrinkles on the sofa skirts? That’s a sure sign of poor (or cheap) workmanship. Probably cost a fortune though...wonder if kickbacks were involved.

I find these colors muddy and depressing. Also, they should have asked Michelle’s advice and left the sofa’s arms uncovered to show how well buffed they were.

I am pleasantly surprised by the decor. I like it. It is calm and peaceful, not boring and dull. It is an office remember not your den at home. I fully expected something as ghastly as MO’s wardrobe, thankfully the 1st lady was not involved with the decision making.

I like the color scheme. I like sages, beiges and rusts. Yep they are my living room colors.

Well...nobody ever accused me of being flamboyant with color either. :)

Loews or Home Depot or Sears. It’s always an option.

No kidding. Just a personal preference, but the yellow would kill me. I would be curled up on one of those sofas and tell the secretary to hold all appointments.

But if I were President, I would be so scared I would probably be drunk most of the time. So the yellow carpets would hide the stains.

The coffee table needs to be in an apartment, it does not belong in the oval office. Otherwise, the rest is bland but OK, IMHO.

The striped wallpaper completely overpowers everything else in the room. The stripes are way too wide.

Ugly! Am abomination has been performed on the people’s house.

That’s what my schoolteacher grandma on the iron range called it, davenport.
