Father charged after daughter falls into pond (Dog saves drowning girl!)

CHARLESTON — A Charleston man is charged with unlawful neglect after deputies say one of his twin daughters walked out of their home and fell into a pond while he slept.

Authorities responded to 2903 Doncaster Drive at 6:13 p.m. Thursday and found one of the 1-year-old girls neck deep in a pond behind the house. A dog was in the water with her, preventing the girl from going under, a Charleston County Sheriff’s Office incident report said.

Deputies charged Adam S. Gray, 33, with unlawful neglect by a custodian after firefighters pulled the girl from the pond and took her to a local hospital to be evaluated, the report said.

A Charleston police officer entered the house through an unlocked back door and found Gray asleep in bed. The officer was able to wake him up after several attempts, the report said.

Gray told officers he put the sleeping children inside their cribs about 5 p.m. and closed the door to their upstairs bedroom before going to his room next to it and falling asleep. He said he usually could hear the girls if they attempted to go down the stairs but didn’t this time, the report said.

Police say the twins were able to push down a gate at the edge of the stairwell and then walk downstairs and out the back door, when one of them fell into the pond. A neighbor heard the girl’s playful voice and called police.

The mother took custody of the children.

Gray does not have any felony convictions in South Carolina, according to a State Law Enforcement Division criminal record check.

A magistrate set Gray’s bail at $10,000 Friday.

I'm not buying your theory. And anyone who has had 2 under the age of two knows what true exhaustion is.

... playful voice and calls police. yeah, makes sense to me. It smells!

Guy should be at home with the kids and mom. Better yet, he should be at work with her at home with the twins!!!! (armor on!)

***Kids are smart, and there is no way to stop them other than restraints or hovering over them every second of the day.***

Exactly. And bearing that in mind - that pond should have been fenced.

believe what you want. I have raised multiple children to adulthood. I know exhaustion, sleepless nights, screaming from ear infections, etc. Child abuse statutes keep these reports confidential and the press gets very little unless the parent releases it. Check it out if you don’t believe it.

You need to have hooks or bolts on the door high up where the kids cannot reach them. You can get a hook for about $2.

I think the father is not at fault but it goes to show you these little ones can get anywhere. Thank God for the doggy.

"Opened the bedroom door "

Can a normal one year old even reach a doorknob? That seems like it might be a stretch to me.

I had multiple children too and have fallen asleep sitting bolt upright. Kids have more energy than parents.

They might be closer to 2-years’ old and there are two of them.

If they didn’t open the bedroom door, the back door and the safety gate - are you suggesting the father put them both outside near the pond (????????????????)

I remember one summer morning, my parents were awakened by a phone call from a neighbor before 7AM, telling my mother that my sister was riding her tricycle down the middle of street, naked. No one thought of calling the police.

Totally agree with you. I did this myself. This is ridiculas. When I was two, I did the same thing. I guess I escaped out the front door and ended up at a gas station about 4 blocks from home. I had to cross a busy main street. My mom ended up picking me up at the police station.

The mother took custody of the children.

The custody of the one year old twin daughters was initially given to the father and not the mother. Methinks, custody battles with unfit vengeful mothers can be very nasty.
