NEW YORK — A homeowner who grabbed a rifle from his house and fired warning shots in a confrontation with a group of men on his lawn faced arraignment on criminal charges Monday as his family said he was defending his home from a threatening mass of strangers.

George Grier, 30, fired rounds into the ground and air from an assault-style rifle after arguing with a large group of men gathered outside his Long Island home Sunday evening, Nassau County police said. No one was hurt.

His sister, Caprice Rines, said Grier feared for the safety of his wife and two small children when about 20 men converged on his Uniondale lawn after two of them began quarreling. He didn't know the men, who ignored his requests to leave and kept approaching the house, she said.

"They were swarming on the property," so he got a hunting rifle he had bought at a sporting-goods store, she said. "He felt like: 'I have to protect my family.'"

The court’s response? “Shut up, honkey. White people have no rights any longer.”

The home owner was black, the mob was latino, or as Archie Bunker would say, ...

Shooting into the air is not a good idea.

It may come as a surprise to you, but a rifle is a RANGED weapon. You’ll find it’s more effectively used if you keep your opponents at a distance.

a gun is a gun is a gun.

I have long range weapon....close range weapons

and all can be used at close range if necessary.

in NY very few people have handguns as one needs a permit to own one even for home protection....most people do not bother and keep their deer rifles handy for an all purpose weapon...now a shotgun is a good close range weapon but more and more counties in NY are becoming rifle counties for deer so unless they do a bunch of small game hunting which requires a place to go and in the burbs their is no place to go hunting....when most burb hunters take a trip to hunt....it is generally for deer....hence a deer rifle is most common on Long Island.

In point of fact, looking down any center fire rifle should scare anyone.

The riotous can survive many pistol shots, but a rifle shot is usually fatal.

‘Nuff said.

Well stated.

He should walk to the closet set of microphones and state EXACTLY that:

“Is the state insisting that I have an obligation to allow my family to be victims of a mob?

Is the state asserting that lethal shots are preferred to warning shots?

Is the state claiming that a 911 phone call would have solved the threat in time?

Your Honor, the Constitution asserts my right to defend myself and my family, and I did so without harming ANYBODY.
The arresting authorities took no action against the thugs that threatened my family and instead sought to restrain me from carrying out my Constitutionally protected, God given responsibility.”

If only to get the message out to the potential jury pool.

"gasoline is far cheaper"

The fines from the EPA for discharging gasoline into the ground and street would bankrupt you.

My lawnmower leaked ~ sorry.

(NO FINE).

And Fur Shur, after you burn up a gang of 20 no EPA investigator will dare come sniffing around.

Shooting into the air is not a good idea.

In this case, it sounded like a really bad idea! What goes up, must come down. "Be sure of your target, and what is beyond it."

>On a more serious note, it’s never ever a good idea to shoot into the air, especially in a populated area.

The posted portion of the story says that he fired into the ground.

A gang of 20 is probably going to overwhelm a guy with any kind of non-automatic weapon, but fire is different.

FNH's PS-90 has a 50 rd magazine and is semi-auto; the P-90 is full-auto but you probably aren't going to see one of those unless you're on the SWAT team.

While true in an open environment it is somewhat different indoors’ While training to go to Iraq my company did train-up on CQB (close quarters battle; IOW, inside buildings) and the instructors were constantly referring to doorways as “funnels of death” because someone on the other side has reduced the area he has to aim at to that of the doorway.

So, while a rifle may be a “ranged weapon” it is still perfectly capable of being used in close-quarters. A handgun can be used in such a manner too, and there is the added bonus that the doorway would restrict the flow of attackers in to two, or at max three, people at a time giving you some protection from being instantly overwhelmed.

There's also the rotation problem you encounter with every automatic weapon. You have to keep 'em pulled down, or "up" ~ else you're just firing over their heads, or into the dirt.

Learning to properly handle your automatic weapon takes a heafty expense in ammunition.

A barrel of gasoline is much better.

I know about the automatic’s “pull” tendency; which is why I was suggesting the PS-90, the semi-auto/’civilian’ model, it has a good reflexive sight and a 50-round magazine. That *should* be enough to deal with a gang of 20, even assuming that it takes 2 hots to put them out-of-action (which is really overestimating their toughness and/or underestimating the rifleman’s accuracy).

With 20 targets of opportunity like that you could easily get overexcited and miss a few ~ so some might take three rounds to put away.

Good idea to develop a good count for your fire control ~ just like with an M60 or any other larger automatic weapon. Bursts of 2, bursts of 3, bursts of 4, bursts of 5.

I did the machine guns for "The Green Beret". Could not hear for two weeks!
