Chicago mayor retirement stuns White House

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced Tuesday he is retiring, in a stunning move that may prompt a White House reshuffle as President Barack Obama's top aide has expressed interest in the post. "It just feels right," 68-year-old Daley told a press conference as he announced the decision to not seek a seventh term as mayor after nearly 22 years on the job.

In Washington, Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who in April said he would one day like to run for the top post in his hometown, said Daley's decision "surprised me."

"While Mayor Daley surprised me today with his decision not to run for reelection, I have never been surprised by his leadership, dedication and tireless work on behalf of the city and the people of Chicago," Emanuel said.

Obama -- who cut his political teeth in Chicago and was a US senator from the state of Illinois -- also weighed in, releasing a statement that described how "no mayor in America has loved a city more or served a community with greater passion."

The departing mayor "helped build Chicago's image as a world class city, and leaves a legacy of progress that will be appreciated for generations to come," Obama said.

My opinion is that he’s REALLY quitting because he loves his cancer-stricken wife, wants to spend time with her, knows his city is in deep money trouble with his popularity low, and knows it’s time.

Personally speaking, I just hope Maggie’s cancer is not worse. She’s been fighting it at least five years.

As to Rahm E., I don’t think he has a chance to be elected mayor. There are probably 15-20 others who are ready to jump into the race, and it’s not a Democrat-Republican thing. It’s a 50% plus one win. I think if there’s no winner the first round, then it’s the top two in a run-off.

"I thought Rahm wanted to run for Illinois Governor.

Mayor of Chicago runs the state. I've been gone from Chicago for a while....not sure if Rahm had the where-with-all to force Da Mayor out, but it sounds like Richie is ready to go. Shocked or surprised ? Doubt that

The city needs a Giuliani type of Mayor.

The first Mayor Daley was that type of Mayor. He was a sleazebag but he did grow the city and prevented it from becoming Detroit.

Chicago is his reward. Daly knows the party duty. White House ‘stunned’? Ha! I think not. Nothing to see here. If Rahm does run, how likely is it, really, that he’d lose?... (rhetorical)

About to be indicted or outed? Stained Blue Dress?

Maybe just going along, giving Rahm his due, to avoid being indicted or outed or having that blue dress surface... ;-)

He knows he’s bound to be taken out sooner or later anyway; what he may not realize is, his de facto immunity ends when he’s no longer in charge, and there are a lot of scores to settle. Thanks Justaham.

I’m guessing some sort of indictments are in the works, and a deal was made to step aside.
