Jesse Jackson says Holland's battery plant belongs in Detroit

In addition to voicing his opposition to urban farming in Detroit ("cute but foolish"), civil rights leader Jesse Jackson's remarks to the Detroit City Council on Tuesday featured some provocative comments about the new battery plant in Holland.
Specifically: It should be in Detroit.
The Detroit News quoted him as telling the Council: "The governor, a Democrat, brags about Michigan getting a battery plant, built north of Grand Rapids, as opposed to Detroit, the engine that drives the state. We need industrialization, not farming. Detroit needs the battery plant. Let farmers farm ... We are not offering a farming plan for Baghdad."
Jesse better be careful.....he’s gonna get a wooden shoe where the sun don’t shine with a tulip thrown in for good measure....
That’s great. Maybe when Jesse goes to visit his new battery factory, we’d have another chance at stealing his Cadillac...

The government can certainly offer incentives, etc. to a manufacturer to try to convince them to build a facility at a certain place. But in the end, the battery plant will be built where the owner wants it built. And my guess is that the owner has taken a look at Holland and has taken a look at Detroit - and at the education, presence of unions, work ethic and other characteristics of the available workforce - and has decided that the alternatives are not whether it will be built in Holland or in Detroit, but whether it's built in Holland or China.
Detroit was the engine of Michigan. But it hasn't been for decades, and it may never be again. The modern economy is no longer as centered on massing manufacturing facilities in urban areas anymore. That's why we've been able to function with manufacturing most of our goods 8000 miles away. Better 100 miles from Detroit than 8000 miles from it. At least they'll still be filled by Michigan residents paying Michican taxes.
Say - maybe some of the people in Detroit will move to Holland for those jobs. Because that's what they want to do, right? Work for a living? I'm actually sure that many if not most of them do.

Detroit and the I-94 were the engine that drove Michigan. Unfortunately, unions got greedy and cut off the spine and all those non union jobs in the I-94 corridor were the first to go overseas as a means of keeping the union beast fed.
Here in Jackson Michigan we had some big players that were both union and non union. Names like Clark Equipment, Goodyear, and Yardman were major players. Corning glass was next door in Calhoun county. Now days we have retail and welfare.
The industrial district in Jackson is full of dilapidated factory buildings that have been empty so long that they’ll never be used again. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the owners simply abandoned them to avoid paying taxes.
