RANCHO CUCAMONGA - The Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino is defending its decision to hold an event in the city that rallied support around legislation that would aid undocumented young people.
The gathering at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church aimed to raise awareness and promote advocacy for the DREAM Act, said John Andrews, spokesman for the Diocese of San Bernardino.
The Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act would help young illegal immigrants who are illegally in the United States enlist in the military, attend college or acquire citizenship. The youth would have to meet certain requirements, such as being high school graduates and of good moral character.
But members of a Claremont-based grassroots group said the Catholic Diocese has violated the separation of church and state principle. Separation of church and state is derived from documents put together by the country's founders.
"They are no longer advocating people to vote, they are going further beyond than that. They are politically looking to circumvent the rule of law," said Raymond Herrera, founder of We The People, California's Crusader

Strip them of their tax-exempt status forthwith! As a Catholic I’ve nothing but the utmost contempt for the church hierarchy and the Vatican. Nothing but a bunch of money-grubbing hypocrites.
I have had my issues with the Church for many years, but its blantant encouragement of illegal immigration, to America’s detriment, was what finally caused me to break with the Church.

Am I of ‘’good moral character’’ if I decide not to continue to pay my taxes to subsidize criminality such as this?
One more reason I’m not part of that church anymore.
Church believes that you can reject secular laws if they are immoral. thus the foundation of liberation theology.
Besides over 90% of illegals are roman catholic.
This is one of N reasons why I left the church - where N is a large number.

In 1988, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) established CLINIC as a legally distinct 501(c)(3) organization to support a rapidly growing network of community-based immigration programs. CLINIC’s network originally comprised 17 programs. It has since increased to more than 185 diocesan and other affiliated immigration programs with 290 field offices in 48 states. The network employs roughly 1,200 attorneys and “accredited” paralegals who, in turn, serve 600,000 low-income immigrants each year. CLINIC and its member agencies represent low-income immigrants without reference to their race, religion, gender, ethnic group, or other distinguishing characteristics.
In 2007 alone, CLINIC provided 7,676 detained immigrants with “know your rights” workshops.
Doesn’t surprise me. I live in the Diocese of San Bernardino. Bishop Gerald Barnes keeps pumping out letters to parishioners about how we have a moral obligation to support ALL immigrants. Just one more reason why folks are no longer contributing to any of Bishop Barnes’ fund raisers. Plus, each parish is given a budget number it must hit for his special annual fund raiser. If the budget number is not reached, then the parish has to reach into its own funds to make up the difference. Talk about a shakedown. This is in addition to the tithing amount, something like 10 to 20% of weekly basket collections, that have to be turned over to the diocese.
Let the Catholic Church pay the federal taxes that go to local school districts to pay for educating illegals, including the expense of training and educating bilingual teachers. Let them pay for the medicaid the vast majority of illegal students are on, and for the social services that their parents receive. Then let the Catholic Church suffer the consequences of increasing radical left voters and degrading the US to a Third World pit.
THE CATHOLICS ARE NOT BRINGING IN THE ILLEGALS. THE PROTESTANT FARMERS OUT WEST HAVE ALWAYS HAD A “TASTE FOR SLAVES”. THEY WANT THEM TO WORK ON THEIR RANCHES FOR VERY LITTLE WAGES.

The Catholic Church, in certain respects, resembles a confederacy whereby bishops retain a remarkable degree of latitude with regards to political issues. The Vatican exerts a veto power (or more commonly pressure) over the actions of bishops in each diocese when it is clear that the bishop is violating dogma. The opinions rendered by national organizations such as UCCB carry no formal authority over individual dioceses.
There are some conservative bishops (but sadly no enough) that actually get it. Some bishops have even opposed efforts of the politically formidable CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development). The CCHD has numerous connections to Alinsky inspired organizations (such as IAF) and other radical illegal immigration support groups. The Catholic Church in the US has had ties with the Left in a significant way since the 60s.
I believe that if the Catholic Church does not quickly and thoroughly re-evaluate its role in supporting Leftist organizations, we will certainly see more devout parishioners dropping out and the money drying up. This has the real potential to be more problematic for the Church than the priest sex abuse scandal.
It’s rich even for Rats to suggest the gummit is in any condition to tell who has “good moral character” without tying itself in knots in the attempt.
If a youth in question is adamantly against gay marriage, for instance, is this grounds to chuck him out, or to keep him, or a matter of indifference?
