TEHRAN, Iran – The American woman released by Iran on Tuesday after more than a year in prison said she was humbled and grateful to Iran's president for her freedom shortly before she boarded a flight to the nearby Gulf sultanate of Oman where her mother was awaiting her.

Iran freed Sarah Shourd, 32, after a $500,000 bail was paid to win her freedom.

thanks for the info on your impressions of Kurdistan

yes, and I find it difficult to credit the claim at the link that the 4 had no idea they were so close to the border with Iran???

although from reading a few things online about them just now, it seems plausible that they were idiot-lefties-without-a-clue rather than lefties trying to do something adventuresome for journalism by crossing the Iranian border

I don’t know. Her friend and fiancee are still being held... and I would bet she was told that they would suffer very painful punishments each time she did not play along. I guess we will need to await the other’s release.

I’m wondering if this whole deal was a propaganda stunt by several Berkeley Islamic Americans done for the greater glory of Iran?

I mean of all the places on earth to hike, why would anyone in their right minds pick the Iranian border?

I mean, WTH, you can’t go hiking in the Alps, Rockies, Sierras, Cascades, Andes, Himalayas....but near Iran?

Yes, out of all the mountain ranges in the world, their choice of places to hike and the timing therein seems a little off.

And they came from Syria to do this.

Did they just like hanging out in enemy territory?

I mean, Kurdistan isn't enemy territory, but Syria? And then right up by (and over) the Iranian border?

I've been a little skeptical of this ever since the story broke and I suspect there's quite a bit more to it.

BlueMax: They should pull her passport and put her on every no-fly list in the world.

There is such a thing as “too stupid to leave the country.”

I hope she can find other venues for “hiking”.

lesson learned hopefully.........

That is is not too trendy to hike the mountains of eastern Turkey....perhaps a nice walk in the mountains of Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho.... next time where there are no wars going on.

What else can one expect when she was still on Iranian soil?

Particularly when two friends are left behind to face the consequences of anything less than a statement of gratitude.

oh I didn’t “expect” anything else -— of course she has to be worried to death for her two friends

anyway, it seems that she is a die-hard pro-jihad anti-Israel lefty who will be happy to provide pro-regime propaganda for the Mullahs

she and her pals were LIVING in Syria for a year (enemy territory) and are firmly aligned with the jihad cult

it won’t take any inducements to get people like that to provide propaganda for Iran

They got away with it in 1979, until Daddy came home. Thus far, osamabama hasn’t seemed very concerned about these three stinking kuffirs, but back in the day they just kept on taking more hostages until they got the attention they sought.

I doubt that they were spying, but they were probably doing some stupid peacenik sort of thing. “Sarah Shourd” sounds vaguely middle eastern. Maybe she thought she knew the terrain. Actually, aren’t they lib christians or something?

I read she is anti-Israel and some sort of journalist who was living in the middle east - possibly Syria. I have no sympathy for any of the three idiot liars.

Reports are neither our government nor her family paid it but they won’t say who did.

Do you really believe they were just hiking? How many people do you know who go hiking? How many go hiking in Iraq along the border with Iran?

Questions About Released Far-Left Activist “Hiker” Sarah Shourd

By Debbie Schlussel

As you probably know, today, far-left, anti-American, anti-Israel activist “writer” Sarah Shourd was released from Iranian custody in exchange for $500,000 bail.

You know my position on Shourd and her co-horts. As I’ve written, they are far-left, anti-American, anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian propagandists who lived in Syria–another Muslim, human rights abusing, terrorist-host state for which she served as an apologist and shill, writing gushing articles about the country. (See also, here.) They went hiking in Iran. They lived in Syria. They knew the risks, and it’s sad that tax-funded public servants spent oodles of time on them. I’m sorry that Shourd–reports say–may have breast cancer. But that doesn’t change who she is: a shill for Palestinian and Syrian Islamic terrorists. She is an activist (her own self-description), NOT a journalist (not that being a journalist would make her any more important).

And I have a few questions:

In May of 1804 Ian Perdicaris was kidnapped for ransom by a Moroccan, Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli.

Teddy Roosevelt said,”This government wants Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead.” He then sent the Marines to handle it. In the old days this is how kidnapping was handled.

I don’t expect to see that kind of strength shown in this day and age.

I'd much prefer a US President who pummeled these savages into submission...... unfortunately that TR story may have been more public relations bluster than reality:

"Pedicaris Alive or Raisuli Dead"

at least it did give us a movie vehicle for Candice Bergen and Sean Connery (though I've never seen that one)

Why did we the tax payers have to pay this ransom? She went there on her own free will and got busted being a lefty. Why should I have to pay for the actions of someone dumb enough to go over there and get in to trouble?
